I don't understand why I couldn't cash my check

So I went to my local bank with the hopes of cashing a check, not depositing it. The teller tells me because I only have seven cents in my checking account, I couldn't cash the check. This is a debit card I only use for paying bills. She tells me if I had at least $200 I could have gotten the cash, and now the money I wanted for tomorrow, I will not get until Tuesday morning.

Could someone please explain to me what does the amount of money I have in my checking account have to do with a check that I'm trying to cash in? It makes no sense to me. Thanks in advance.

you have to have enough in your account to cover the amount of the check you are cashing, in case, the check bounces.

I believe the bank wants money in your account to cover at least a certain amount of the check in case it bounces.

Re: I don't understand why I couldn't cash my check

The bank doesn't want to be on the hook in case the check bounces. If you're a relatively new client and/or don't have a credit history, banks often hold checks till they clear. I have a bank account like that as well with almost no money in it. I keep it just to have a secondary account. They never hold my checks, but I think it's because I also have a line of credit with them. If the check bounced, they could just put it onto that (that's my theory at least).

I've never done this, but I've heard that if you need the money immediately, you can get it by cashing it at the bank from which the check is drawn.

Re: I don't understand why I couldn't cash my check

Ah, if the teller had it explained it to me that way, I wouldn't have been visibly annoyed. The way she explained it to me didn't make any sense so that's why I got frustrated.

I guess next time I'll go to Capital One since they supposedly do not charge non-costumers for cashing their checks.

Thanks for the explanations, everyone. Hopefully the check doesn't bounce. This topic could be closed, unless I need to know something else.

The more interesting story here is why you only have 7 cents in your checking account.

Nah, lets all talk about check cashing for 20 pages. That sounds fun!

That should be applauded. If that we mine, I'd have 7 cents, minus however many accidental overdrafts happened since.

Well this does raise an interesting question -- if you go into a store and write a check these days, they'll run it through a scanner and the money will be debited from your account right away, no different than if you used a bank card, but if you take a check to a bank, they act like it's the 19th Century and they have to wait for the Pony Express rider to deliver it to the drawing bank and return with confirmation that it's good. Requiring you to have enough money in your account to cover a check may've made sense thirty years ago, but it's 2015 -- a bank should be able to process a check and release the money instantly.

What's even worse is if someone give you a completely FAKE check and you deposit it in your bank acct, it takes them a week to figure it out.

When I did a lot of freelance work and took a bunch of checks from random people, I got burned a couple times. After that would always just cash the checks at the issuing bank (most were local). That is the only way to know for sure (and I am talking 15+ years ago and it things have not gotten much better)

I am assuming the OP is young and this is his first bank acct

At my bank if you cash a check they deposit it then give you the money, so there's a record of the transaction.

You're not doing the dance right. It's the timeless art of seduction. You got to join in the dance. She tells you you can't get your money until Tuesday, you go in on Tuesday and tell her her mouth can't be on your cock until you get your money.

US Bank has been getting some promotion lately for being reasonable about their policies.

Re: I don't understand why I couldn't cash my check

This topic is off track... in case it hadn't been mentioned, they wouldn't let you cash it in case the check bounced-- you should have enough to cover it.
