Pet Peeves of Servers dealing with Customers in Restaurants

For those of you who have worked in the restaurant industry (or even if you haven't), what are some of your pet peeves of customers?

I always hated it when, in lieu of a tip, they kicked me really hard in the nuts.

I hate it when I tip, but get resistance when I kick them in the nuts. The entitlement culture of the working class is ruining our nation.

It's been many years since I waited tables (I mean, like almost thirty, lol) but I remember what pissed me off most was when religious people would leave me a Bible tract instead of a tip. This happened a lot because the restaurant I worked in was a popular spot for the after-church and after-Wednesday-night-prayer-meeting crowd.

What's with this grammar?

Pet Peeves of Customers in Restaurants

This means customers' complaints about the restaurant, not employees' complaints about the customers.

An eternity in paradise is worth more than three or four dollars isn't it?

Though I've never understood why they can't tip a little cash in addition to the bible tract...

I was wondering how the hell would we know what annoys the customers.

I worked at a place near a LARGE, I mean 'effing HUGE ass church (nicknamed Six Flags over Jesus), and the owner had to go to the preacher and tell him to send his flock elsewhere if they weren't going to tip. Funny how people will line the churches pockets but tipping the hard working employees serving you is out of the question.

Along the same line, this same restaurant had a kids eat free night, no limitations. You would have a single parent come in with a baseball team order a single meal with water and get 10 free kid's meals. This policy was beyond stupid but that's on the owner, but the kicker? These people abusing the system would tip on the lone $10 meal and not what the bill would have been with the 10 free meals.

re: Pet Peeves of Servers dealing with Customers in Restaurants

I run a buffet style restaurant and I constantly see people eating in line before they get their utensils. Some even lick their fingers and then pick up the same tong that the guest behind them will use. It is repulsive and disgusting and people are just gross. We do change out the tongs if we see this being done, which is usually all day long.

Also, women who pull their money or credit card out of the top of their bra. Like I really want to touch your boob sweat. I'd rather let you eat for free. Gross.

re: Pet Peeves of Servers dealing with Customers in Restaurants

Re: the tipping issue with the kids' meals, that is the problem with a society that has been taught to tip based on the bill. This is why I usually start with a $4 to $5 tip and work from there, regardless of the meal cost. Overpriced or underpriced food doesn't affect the quality of the service.

Pet peeves as a customer -- #1: refill my drink. Don't ask, don't wait till it is gone, don't bring me two drinks to avoid making an extra trip. #2: don't go on break and send somebody else while I am YOUR customer. #3: don't tell me that whatever I ordered is your favorite thing on the menu. It might be, but it comes off phony.

So in other words, a server's biggest pet peeve is a customer exactly like you. Got it.

I hate when a waiter or waitress takes my order and doesn't write anything down. I can almost guarantee something is going to be screwed up.

re: Pet Peeves of Servers dealing with Customers in Restaurants

As the cook, I didn't have too many problems with customers. The biggest was probably when everyone would order one type of meal, and then a single person would order something radically different. This was mostly an issue at the 24 hr truck stop I worked at for a while. 6 breakfasts, and one order of the three piece fried chicken. Fried chicken takes a while, everyone else's scrambled egg orders would have to wait.

I'm confused, are you saying that you don't think servers should ever get any breaks, or you would rather that nobody took care of you while your server was on break?

I think you're getting restaurateur confused with iconoclast.
