Need some kitty related advice

My cat is 14 and lately she's taken to shitting in the bathtub. At first it was maybe once a week but now it's gotten to be a daily occurance. I keep her litter box clean so that's not the problem and otherwise she's acting perfectly normal. Is this just an age thing perhaps, or could she be trying to get attention cause my depression has been bad lately and I've been sleeping 12 hours a day? I'd also welcome any suggestions on how to get her to stop doing it.

Shitting could be painful for her, and if she associates that pain with the litter box, that might be why she's avoiding it. Probably worth a vet appointment, or at least reconsidering her diet. If she's constipated, you can add psyllium fiber to her food.

If it's a daily thing, leave about 4-5 inches of water in the bathtub. Since cats hate water , she won't likely jump in there if there's water in there.

Teach her to flush, then she will realize the difference between bathroom fixtures.

She learned it by watching you.

Send her to live with Alan Smithee.

I second the advice for a vet visit.

It may be easier for her to get in and out of the bathtub for some reason. The litter might be irritating her feet. She may be in pain, and wanting you to know something is wrong.

DO NOT leave water in the bathtub. She'll jump in to shit, be startled, levitate out of the tub, and in the process, shit all over your bathroom.

Then, she'll shit in your shoes.

That said, I'd definitely leave water in the tub.

Re: Need some kitty related advice

Is the litter box CLEAN? My cat Marcia will do her business in other places if I haven't scooped the box out in a couple days, so that gives me a reason to keep on top of that! If this is a 'new' thing for your cat then definitely keep an eye on her and take her to the vet if she's acting different. Although Marcia was peeing in different places for a while, including on my bed with me sleeping in it, even with the litterboxes clean, so I took her in and after a $200 test they couldn't find anything wrong with her and she pretty much went back to normal after that. She's done that before when she's upset about something- she once peed on the curtains in response to a neighbor cat outside.

Clearly abnormal. Take your cat to the vet.

I would just have her put to sleep, but that's my suggestion for most cats.

And most cat owners, come to think of it.

Re: Need some kitty related advice

The vet thing, absolutely. I had a cat that I had to have put to sleep because she was doing the same thing. (It wasn't normal/good #2 either. It was runny/discolored.) She had never not used the litter box but she kept going down to the room next to where her litter box was and going there.

Took her to the vet (well the 2nd time; the 1st time a different vet at that clinic wanted to try drugs. Kept her alive and miserable for 6 more days. One of the biggest regrets of my life.) and the vet read her chart, saw her condition, and told me what I had figured any way. She was terminal and I let them end her misery.

At least worth a visit to the vet, even if it's nowhere near as dire a situation. Good luck.

shit in the litter box, bring her over gently and tell her "that is where you are supposed to go". i figure it worked on my mom, it should work on a cat.

Re: Need some kitty related advice

This is a new thing, so, depending on where the litter box is now, move it into the bathroom next to the tub. If your cat then switches back to the litter box, over the next few days gradually move it back to where it was, and see if this does the trick.

It may be that she is responding to your recent change in habits (sleeping more, paying less attention to him/her) and just saying 'hey, remember me?'

If that doesn't change things, or if there are other symptoms; eating less, drinking more water than usual, lethargy or other behavioral differences - then a visit to the vet would be in order.

edit to add: jumping in the tub to poop is way harder for a cat than walking in to a litter box, so my instinct is that your cat is communicating something that's behavioral rather than health-related.

Re: Need some kitty related advice

Her box is already in the bathroom, and I'm pretty sure she stands on the side of the bath and just hangs her ass over the side. She hasn't done it the last day and a half and I've been up more during that time playing Ni No Kuni so hopefully it was a attention grabbing thing. Like I said earlier, she's acting normally otherwise, so if she quits, great, and if not off to the vet she goes. She's due in next month anyway for some blood work.

Re: Need some kitty related advice

You might also try a different litter--mix it with the usual kind for a few days. I still think if she is avoiding the box it's because she's having pain when she uses it which is a medical thing, not a behavioral thing. Cats like to cover their waste, and you can bet she's not resorting to shitting in the tub just to piss you off. Even though she's due in next month, it wouldn't hurt to just call the vet and ASK about it.

Re: Need some kitty related advice

Do you live on a single floor house? My cat started peeing on the carpet downstairs because her legs hurt from arthritis, so it was hard to get upstairs to use the litter box. I now have 2 litter boxes, one downstairs and one upstairs. The cat is possibly in some sort of pain and should be checked by a vet. I took mine to the vet when she started acting weird and with some adjustments, she's ok now. She's 15 yrs old.

Re: Need some kitty related advice

I would go the vet to at least rule out anything.

Other than that, cats kind of suck. Our cat started peeing on the floor, getting a second litter box stopped that. She uses both, both are cleaned once or twice a day. A while later, she started crapping on the rug right next to the litter box. We picked up the rug, she went back to crapping in the boxes.
