Someone stole my wife's identity and bought an iphone 6plus

I got a bill from AT&T in the mail yesterday. It's my wife's maiden name, not her current name, but the address is our address and the bill is for $247.

The bill lists the phone numbers. What can I do?

Sell it on eBay to some sucker for $500.

I don't think eBay allows the selling of wives.

I don't possess the phone. Just the bill.

When talking to the AT&T person will I be able to verify what credit card and SS# was used to open the account? I want to know how far this goes.

Also, should I call or text the guy? Just to fuck with him.

While that would be fun it would probably reduce the chances of them being caught

Re: Someone stole my wife's identity and bought an iphone 6plus

I would just go to AT&T with everything. They'll cancel the phone, cancel your bill, and the guy will be left with a dead phone. I doubt they'll followup with the thief.

Careful that your wife isn't a sleeper agent for the CIA or something.

I would also go to one of those "protect your identity" places ASAP. If the thief could do this, it means your wife's data is out there on the market. Might be a recurring problem. Especially if she has OK credit. Next time it might be a car loan or something.

They don't allow the selling of flamethrowers either, but my brother in law still won one.

Off to cross post to the obtaining illegal items thread! :-)

I'm sure whoever did this re-sold the phone within hours of getting it. They know it's going to be deactivated.

Did you get hit on your credit card bill or just a bill from AT&T?

Call the three credit repositories and get them to put a hold on your credit and a identity theft watch on it. Then call AT&T.

Also, what are the odds that wife wanted a secret phone?

Get credit reports, file police report about the issue, then contact AT&T

Why contact AT&T last? And why file police report? Why would the police give two fucks? Not like the perp lives in my town, or even this country.

Why? Someone who buys an iPhone can't be that smart.

She probably pre-ordered it a few months before you were married and didn't tell you, in case you were an Android type of guy.

That has been one of my worries. Not so much that someone will steal my identity, but that they'll steal it and do something stupid with it.

I had my identity stolen, and had about close to $20,000 worth of CC charges over various retailers done in my name. I contacted all of their fraud departments, they were very nice, but the police report carried a lot of weight (and the CC's were open in North Carolina, I live in NYC, and under the circumstances they wouldn't even let me speak to an officer, a clerk took down the info and I was given a copy of the report).

Granted the opening a CC and getting a new phone are two different things, but who knows if AT&T would ask for it.

I assume the phone number on the bill is new?

Re: Someone stole my wife's identity and bought an iphone 6plus

AT&T deactivated it. I need to check our credit and put fraud alert on my and her report.

What's odd is that the AT&T fraud person says that given the info given by the fraudster it seemed like something done by someone close to us. Not intimate but close enough to know about name change and have correct drivers license number and ss#.

Shouldn't you also contact your bank about identity theft?

That doesn't make sense. Unless you resell it as a black market pre-paid phone with an unknown expiry date.

Maybe the scam is to buy one and then flip-flop a used-old-junk phone and then sell the iPhone? If the 6plus is already activated on a legit account, I doubt they'd label is "stolen". That would cause too much trouble with their customers.
