Fuuuuckkk...

And this ain't some obscure back-road in the middle of nowhere, it's literally one of the most traveled and congested stretches of highway in the world!

They're doing a press conference right now, and they said in Ventura the next two days are going to have wind conditions (80+ mph) which will make it impossible to fight fires... and right now the Thomas fire is still at 0% containment.

That 405 fire (the Skirball fire) by the Getty started at like 5 in the morning too and is a decent distance from the other fires.

Re: Holy Heat Wave Batman!, How hot is it where you are?

It is weird to see a long list of school closures in my parents neighborhood...I walked to some of those schools when I was a tiny lad. The air quality must be very hazardous for wee ones to shut down so many schools (two schools on the list are San Fernando High School which is where I went to summer school, and Sharp Ave Elementary that is only 5 blocks from my parents home is where I attended grades 1-4).

If the wind shifts I am sure the majority of schools will be open tomorrow.

Don't mean to sound insensitive but I think there is a CA wildlife thread from a few months ago.

You are right...happy to give that thread a bump as new info on the fires comes in.

I looked for it - didn't find it and this was at the top of the page. Anyways, wildfires this time of the year are a byproduct of inclimate heat, so I'd say it fits this thread.

I just bumped the Firestorm 2014 happening now thread and suggested a mod change the title of that thread so it becomes the new home of wildfire (in CA and elsewhere) news and discussions. The search engine on this site is still a major bummer.

...Except this year where we've had excessive sunshine of around 360 days and 90 degrees in fucking mid-December.

It snowed in Central and South Texas a couple of nights ago. Ranged from 2"-6" between the Hill Country/Austin down through Corpus Christi.

I am so giddy that it has been raining basically non-stop the entire day because we are seeing fewer of these rain events than usual during the peak rain season, so I will take what we can get. VHS, your post made me chuckle...love it!

We do need the rain but I feel for those in my area and LA who had the resent fires. This only creates another headache with flooding and mudslides.

It's been a mild ass winter. I remember last year this time we were freezing our asses off for the first time in years.

Yay, we got about 0.1" of rain, and it is a BIG, BIG, huge news day and everybody is going wild.

Now, bring on about 10" more and we will actually get to a "normal" winter.

Well, it actually became a pretty good run in the OC today, much to my elation. We probably got 0.75". I'll take what I can get. It will all dry up by the weekend when it is going to be god-awful hot - mid 80s, windy and dry again.

We got 0.92 yesterday and 1.28 today.. so 2.2 inches of rain. Not bad.. Not as much as I would have liked but it's a good start

Re: Holy Heat Wave Batman!, How hot is it where you are?

I am surprised this thread was not already bumped, but that rainstorm that brought a good chunk of CA some desperately needed rain took a very dark turn. Good lord, the mudslides have turned what used to be a gorgeous and very wealthy enclave into a region that looks like a war zone. At last count we are looking at I believe 17 dead, more than 100 homes damaged (some knocked off their foundations!), profoundly sad regardless of how much money you needed to live in the areas that were effected.

Not long after I saw an article pop up that said that we know the areas of CA that should be off limits as far as building a home but good luck with that...last time I checked developers keep getting the green light to build in parts of TX and FL that are weather disaster magnets.

Re: Holy Heat Wave Batman!, How hot is it where you are?

Yeah, it's nuts - the mudslides killed more people than the fires. Can you imagine a mudslide just taking your house off it's foundation? Insane.
