Does anyone know this quotation/saying?

A woman said it in a dream I had Friday night but it was too eloquent to be an original by me. This is a rough paraphrase but she was talking to someone and mentioned Kipling said the man who laughs, or should laugh, at the world (the universe or life, one of those things), the man who laughs loudest realizes that he's ultimately laughing at himself because he knows life is laughing at him or something like that. I don't know if it really was something from Kipling; that's just what the dream girl said and she put it much better than I just did. Anybody have a clue what the original saying is?

This was a dream you had? The women in my dreams are naked eye candy. They aren't spouting off life philosophy mumbo jumbo.

I know that woman. She has visited me in many dreams and recited those same words. But she also warned me not to tell the words to anyone in the waking world or she would return as a viper and pierce my genitals as I sleep. Sorry she didn't tell you that part of the deal.

Pfft. My dreams have camera angles and plots.

I believe that you invented that quotation in your dream, and then attributed it to Kipling.

"Do you like Kipling?"
"You kinky man! I've never even Kipled."

President Taft was going to use that joke in one of his speeches, but his advisors told him it was too old and corny.

I think the quote you are thinking of is from Tolstoy: "War...what is it good for?"

Razors pain you,
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you
And drugs cause cramp.

Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful ...
You might as well live.

..which was the original title of the book until Tolstoy's mistress told him to change it to "War and Peace".

Re: Does anyone know this quotation/saying?

Don't worry. I was having sexy time with that dream woman. The 10 seconds of coherence/philosophy was when she was explaining to her uptight sister why she liked me. Then the dream resumed its course as the philosopher told her sister that she should try sexy time with me. My dream self didn't question why the sister was folding my laundry.

I wish I could have philosophical people in my dreams, then I'd have someone intelligent to talk to. I don't remember much about my dreams, so it's conceivable that they'll full of attractive women who're interested in me. But I would think I would remember that.

Too limiting. I assumed he meant he was peeing in her butt.

It sounds like she re-evaluated the situation and decided not to make that threat in future hauntings.
So, you're sorry that the OP got a better deal from the woman, because he doesn't have pierced genitals like yourself?

What's that like, anyway? I mean, are they leaking all over the place, or is the piercing like when you get your ears pierced; uncomfortable, and maybe a bit infected, but now you can shove pencils through them at parties?

Re: Does anyone know this quotation/saying?

I doubt this is it, but the OP made me think of:

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone;
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.

Had to Google it to remember the last 2 lines.

"Solitude" by Eliza Wilcox Wheeler. Also known as a part of the poster tagline for Oldboy.

Well, that certainly puts an interesting little spin on this dream, doesn't it?

The Man Who Laughs -

I'm not certain but I don't think I've read that book. Hugo's not an everyday read for me. I can go a year or two between his books. Have you read it? Does the saying sort of summarize the whole book or is there a specific part where a character says something similar to the quote? That's the thing about his books; people can dislike them simply because they read a poorly translated edition thinking that it's the only version.

Re: Does anyone know this quotation/saying?

I think that woman in my dream lied because the quote is from Moby Dick: "There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own." I don't need my dream women lying to me: I can get that in reality.

So you were dreaming about Dick and queer times?

I'm glad you used one of your 16 posts to update us on this. Were you still googling for an answer, or did you just decide to reread Moby Dick?
