Advice Needed: Air Condition Units For a New House

So i am close to moving into my new house and i need to pick up a few wall mounted Air Condition Units (Living room, couple of bedrooms). I have no idea of what are the best ones to go for and the ones that will be most electricity efficient.

Any advice? What is a reasonable price to pay? I see pricing varying from $600 to thousands. Want to be economical, but no so much that it will cost me more in the long run.

I'm guessing the ones that cost thousands are better and use less electricity.

You would probably need to do a chart that incorporates the usage and energy costs, which probably breaks even after 10 years or so with the more expensive models.

So... get the more expensive ones. It probably won't save you money for a very long time (if ever) but the neighbors will know you make enough money not to trifle with such things. Make sure you have a plan to pay down your debt, starting with the highest interest rate credit cards. You might be able to get a 0% offer for 12 months if you shop around. If so, get an extra unit in case something happens to one of them.

I hear the ductless wall units are pretty awesome.

How many square feet are the rooms?

Window mounted, you mean?

I had one with a remote and LED thermostat. That was nice. Don't remember the brand.

I have central air but have a back-up portable AC with wheels. You just have to run a hose to the window, like the dryer duct. But I think portable AC is bigger than a window AC.

Did this just turn into a credit card thread?

I don't see how you can get a wall mounted (through-the-wall) unit for $600. These cost thousands of dollars.

I have one 18000 BTU unit for a 1,000 square feet condo, and it's enough. Cost me $3,000 CDN years ago. I believe these wall mounted units go up to 36,000 BTU.

Here's a "BTU calculator":

I just got this unit after reading reviews and talking to people at Home Depot. It's a wall-in unit for $600ish. I'll let you know how it does in a few days.

Nevermind, I was confused by the "through-the wall" thing. Looks like those (in the amazon link) are essentially the same as window units, except that they can be installed in a sleeve through a wall.

Not the same as mine, which is on the wall, but connected through the wall to the compressor/refrigiration unit outside.

If you're talking about spending thousands for window units, you're better off biting the bullet and installing central air.

What does central AC cost if you already have central for your furnace? Looks like you can get one for under a grand, but I have no idea what the installation would entail.

I would try Costco.
Just for their return policy.I also bought A Daewoo air condictioner 5000 BTU around 4 or 5 years ago for a small bedroom end of summer sale for under $100.And it is still going strong.
I"m also thinking of getting A Window Evaporative Cooler for the living/dinning room for my dads house.
Still reading reviews coolers.

Costco has (YMMV)
Danby DAC120EUB3GDB 12,000 BTU 11.3 EER - 115-Volt Window Air Conditioner with Remote @ Costco for $260 + tax. They also have smaller units for cheaper.

I'm confused, most apartments / condos use the mini-split system which is what the OP is asking about?

Re: Advice Needed: Air Condition Units For a New House

Well we are not looking for window air condition units. We are looking for wall attached AC. The two rooms we are primarily looking at to begin with are our bedroom (13 feet x 15 feet), a second bedroom (12 feet x 12 feet) and the living room, which is actually an open plan with the kitchen and incorporates a second living room with high ceilings (Main living area 13 feet x 16 feet, Second living room area 12 feet x 11 feet and Kitchen 11 feet by 9 feet).

As i mentioned, i am clueless when it comes to AC units. I have them in the places i have lived, but i have never had to shop for them before. I get the impression that Central AC would be the best option, but might also be the more expensive option. For the couple of other bedrooms i have in the house i would be tempted to get a portable AC unit if it would prove cost effective. It would certainly be practical as these are rooms that would not be getting used all that much and so i would prefer to not have to dish out on expensive AC units for them.
