What do you say to "moon landing" deniers?

I mean... seriously.

I found out, a few weeks ago, that certain family members were are very much convinced that the moon landings never happened. My understanding is that there were six landings total.

So...

What do you say to these people to set them straight?

Like all conspiracy theories, it falls apart in the sheer number of people involved. Getting 10 people to hide a conspiracy theory is one thing. Getting literally tens of thousands who worked on the Apollo program to stay quiet this many years is literally an impossibility.

Re: What do you say to "moon landing" deniers?

Can't say I've ever actually met a moon landing denier. To be honest, part of me thinks the few people who are deniers don't even think they're right, they just want to be contrarians to be different.

If I ever happen to work on a big project that has a conspiracy theory spring up around it, I'm going to come out as "whistleblower" and accept speaking fees, transportation, etc from the various conspiracy groups for about a year or so until the money runs out. Then I'm going to reveal it was all a prank, and receive speaking fees, transportation, etc from the other side.

You'd think it'd be on Wikileaks.

Re: What do you say to "moon landing" deniers?

Well I was once at Nasa/JPL in Pasadena shortly before the Mars rover was to "land on Mars". I was taken to a stage where they had what they said was an exact duplicate of the rover and the stage was filled with reddish dirt and rocks and it was going around and doing samples or whatnot. Oddly it looks very much like the first official pictures once we supposedly landed the rover there. Anyhow.. while I was looking at this cool stage one of the workers there, and old guy, said "This is a great stage. It's where we also filmed the moon landing." He was immediately seized upon by some guys in suits and dark glasses and escorted away. Weird.

My 7th grade science teacher didn't believe we ever landed on the moon.

She was an old black woman who loved Dolly Parton and hated all the black boys in the classroom.

Dark glasses inside?! That is weird.

I only met one denier, and I quickly gave up. Now I would probably inform him that we did so land on the moon, and discovered remains of alien civilization, and the government is covering it up by dropping clues that make it seem like we never really were there.

The attractive thing about a conspiracy theory is that it isn't falsifiable. Anything that I can suggest can be slotted into the theory. So why not play with it?

What do I say to them? I don't say anything. Why would I want to "set them straight"? How does this benefit me one iota? Let them wallow in their laughable ignorance.

Re: What do you say to "moon landing" deniers?

My grandmother got heavily into Texe Marrs for 10-15 years before she passed and believed most of what he said. Look up his site for a boatload of crazy. He likes to have it both ways, with the moon landing being some sort of Satanic ritual, but also possibly being completely faked, with the Satanic ritual taking place on a soundstage. There's really no arguing with someone once they go down the path to believing such nonsense, unless it's a symptom of a mental disorder you can urge them to get help for. If they're someone you love or care about, you ignore it. If they're not, you ignore them.

I met one of those 9/11 guys, truthers or whatever. It didn't help that he was a crazy christian either. That guy had so many problems.

Re: What do you say to "moon landing" deniers?

I've only met a few truthers/conspiracy theorists, sadly I've never had the chance to listen to their madness directly, but I have been able to call the next customer in line so I think I've been spared.

Oh man, what if 9/11 was faked?! Perhaps the twin towers are still standing. Or even more plausible, and terrifying, they were never there in the first place!

Re: What do you say to "moon landing" deniers?

I say the same thing I say to all conspiracy theorists, people evangelizing their religious or political views, or anyone similar:

"OK."
I just keep saying that over and over, praying that they'll stop talking and leave me alone.

Plenty of people have followed this path; sadly, none have gotten rich.
