What to do with daughter's car?

My daughter has gone overseas for 2 - 4 years to teach English in Korea and possibly Japan after that. We have her car in my driveway. We also have my car, my wife's car, my Trans Am, my father's car I just inherited, my son's truck and my son's motorcycle. My car has 182,000 so I'm keeping dad's for when that dies. I'm hoping my son moves out one day but until he gets a real career type job, he needs to be here to pay off excessive youthful spending.

The car is an 01 Dodge Neon which she got for free from her other grandfather when he stopped driving. I thought about storing it, that'll run about $450 a year. My wife suggested giving it to her sister who's oldest is driving age.

If it were anyone else I would be fine with it, but her youngest sister is one of the most self-centered, selfish, people you could meet. Not only does she not show up to any family event, she never even responds to invites. At our nephew's fiancé's shower she showed up with 15 minutes left and announced because her daughter's softball game was rained out she was able to make it, like that was some badge of honor. She had never RSVP'd. You call, you text and she doesn't respond. We had a going away party for my daughter before she left for Korea and she didn't show up, she didn't call her, she basically didn't acknowledge her leaving. I don't feel any need to gift her kid.

The car isn't worth much and I feel guilty selling a car she got for free. I feel if we get money for it, I should give it to my father-in-law.

I would love to get your thoughts.

Sell it and give the money to your daughter.

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

So it's your daughter's car. What does she want you do with it?

If it's entirely up to you, I'd sell it.

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

Sell it.

No use keeping it and if you don't want to give it that certain someone....then don't.

If she was coming back in say 6 months I'd say keep it...but 2-4 years? Sell it. Buy her a different one when she gets back.

Sell it and give the money to your daughter, or hold the money until she gets back.

I know it's hard to give up a car that says hi

I'm going to disagree slightly with everyone else. You should sell it, but rather than give the money to your daughter, or your father in law, give the money to Creflo Dollar.

What this guy said.

The car will be almost 20 years old by the time she gets back. Even if you only use the $450/yr you're going to save in storage fees, you can get a newer vehicle for $2000. Besides, if you store it, you can run into all the problems that long-term disuse brings on a car.

I don't know your daughter's circumstances, but just FYI a LOT of people move to Korea and Japan to teach english with the intent of staying several years and end up moving back much sooner than they had planned.

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

The car is old--you'd be better off selling it and putting the money towards a newer car later than letting it sit and just get older for 2-4 years.

I hope your daughter loves Korea and Japan. I spent a year in each as a young adult and had a great time.

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

Storing it will not only cost you money that could go to other things, cars that sit for years end up with lots of issues that end up costing more money. Hell. Sell it and take that $450/yr cost and put it away. By the time she gets back you'll have enough money to get a nice car ... seeing as you had the thought of paying for storage anyway.

Sell it. Save money for when she gets back. Add a little more money for a newer car.

I'd suggest the OP hang on to it until he knows his daughter is settled in a bit...once he knows she's not miserable overseas he should go ahead and sell it, and put the money aside for her in the future.

Under no circumstances should he reward his inconsiderate sister in law's kid. Insurance fraud is also inadvisable.

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

Don't give or sell it to anyone you know. They will never stop bothering you about it. You will hear about every problem or little noise it makes forever. Flat tire in two months? your fault. Dead battery next winter? your fault. Eventually they will resent you for sticking them with this "huge problem". Donate it to charity or sell it to a stranger who does not expect a 14 year old car to come with a lifetime bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

Sell it. Don't put too much work into selling it. It's worthless to leave that asset just sitting there.

If you're going to donate, be careful. It's nice and easy. You can probably take a tax writeoff (not sure how much). But a lot of those charities are a joke. Nobody really benefits, except for the charities "overhead costs". If they auction it for $1500, a charity will probably see $100 of that.

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

1. Sell the car and put the money aside for when she comes back.

2. If she comes back early let her drive one of your three cars until she finds something better than the Neon.

3. Divorce your wife for suggesting giving it to her sister's asshole daughter. Something is fishy there. New thread material?

Re: What to do with daughter's car?

I emailed my daughter at the same time I started the thread letting her know what I was thinking. Originally it was to be for one year so I just said I'd store it. Now its anywhere from 2 - 4. You're right, as long as my car is still running, she could drive my father's if she comes back early. I can give her a month or two to settle in, then put it on CL

By the way, the insurance fraud was a joke. We're not desperate for money, just desperate for room.
