Recess Before Lunch

My daughter's elementary school is switching to having recess before lunch. They are trying it for the last four weeks of school to see how it works. I think the theory is that kids hurry through their lunch, or don't eat, because they want to go play. Anyone else got a kid whose school is trying this?

Oops. Wanted this in Other not Politics.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

No big deal to me. When I was young, I remember lunch/recess being one period. Half of the school would eat lunch while the other half had recess. Then at the half way mark, each half would switch.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

I'm surprised schools aren't tying recess time to the healthiness of the lunch.

"Oh, your mom packed twinkies in your lunchbox? You have to wait here for 10 minutes before you can run outside and play. Oh, your mom packed apple slices, you can go to recess immediately."

Re: Recess Before Lunch

It was a hundred or so years ago, but I remember recess being in the morning BEFORE lunch when I was a kid. Maybe to work up our appetite or something.

When my daughter was in elementary school and I would visit the class for special events or go on school trips and such with them I would be surprised at how early the kids ate lunch. But some kids have that condition that requires them to eat early or they can't function.

I remember it being a 15 min. break at 10 a.m. Lunch at noon and a final recess at 1:30 or thereabouts.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

Yeah they still have morning and afternoon recess. This is the recess that is part of lunch that they are switching around.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

Hrmmm. I think we had it where one half would do recess while the other had lunch. I can't remember. I think recess was 30 minutes.

These things change because we need to fight childhood obesity. Then they change again when we decide the problem is childhood hunger. Currently both are at epidemic levels according to the proponents of each.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

I think we got more fat kids than kids with hunger here. Just by observation of the environment.

Not a jab or anything but aren't people in Texas actually bigger? I don't know; I've never been there. In Norway they say the average height there is 6'. Never been there, either.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

I'd think they'd want it after lunch so kids can run around burning off calories that ate during lunch.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

having recess after lunch all gives kids time to pee after drinking their lunch drink.

Same can be said for the opposite. If you eat after exercising you burn calories more efficiently since your body is replenishing itself even though your not moving much.

I agree. But we are continually told about both, which amuses me.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

When I went to school we had only recess. We never had an extra lunch break. There was no lunch served in school either. We had to bring food!

Good old days............................

I don't think it really matters at my son's school. They get only like 15 minutes to eat lunch. It's absurd at how little time they actually get to eat. If they don't eat in 15 minutes, their lunch gets thrown away. Crazy how it has changed since I was in elementary school.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

I've worked in some schools where recess is before lunch. Not for all classes, but for some. Pretty sure it wasn't for some nefarious agenda or whatever, but for scheduling purposes.

Re: Recess Before Lunch

Some schools in the district where I currently work do this. It's mostly a scheduling thing as far as I know.
