It's just too much work for me right now, but maybe this weekend if I get super bored and my decoder ring kicks in.

Me too. If I had more time I'd look into how to do it and try an easier one. Either way, this thread should be in Other. I'm sure there are more people there that would want to give this a shot.

You get NOTHING because you didn't explain the cipher.

DVD Talk Cryptography Challenge

Cross posted from the Tech forum because they don't like Ovaltine.

Decipher the text

Since this is the first challenge, I don't want to make it hard but it's not going to be a substitution cipher either.
HINT 1: http://dictionary.reference.com/list/
HINT 2: Hint 1 won't help you starting out
HINT 3: With the exception of hint 1, this can be solved with paper and pencil. You can do this without harvesting the power of your CPU/GPU.

The winner will be able to:
Post the original text in it's entirety
Explain how it was enciphered

Want to practice on something easier?
http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2007...ber/code112107
http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2008...er/code_122908
http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2009/may/code_052309
http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2009...er/code_122409
http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2013...u-crack-a-code

How hard is this cipher? If you can do some of the FBI ones, you can get somewhere with this one.

If the winner wants a prize, the prize is to do a new code to solve. I just ask that it's not crazy hard. At least as difficult as this one or slightly harder.

I posted over there but the tech side should really be solving it before those people.

I also added

Well, that's one way to get around the rule against posting pornography. But couldn't your story have at least one chick in it?

Re: DVD Talk Cryptography Challenge

Hint 2: The number of letters can also be expressed as n * (n+1). If you solve for n, then you can rearrange the letters in a rectangle of n characters in n+1 rows. You would only need to add 1 letter/space/character to each row to make it a square.

Re: DVD Talk Cryptography Challenge

Hint 3: If you add a space along the major diagonal of the rectangle of characters to form a square, you can then read straight down the center column, because your newly-formed square conveniently happens to have an odd number of columns.

Hint 3a: And the number of columns just happens to be a prime number as well.

Re: DVD Talk Cryptography Challenge

Okay, I guess I have to do all the work!

Hint 1: 506
Hint 2: n=22
Hint 3: Since n+1 is an odd number and prime...

A little more basic help so this doesn't seem as hopeless to people who are new to this

http://www.cryptograms.org/letter-frequencies.php

If the winner wants a prize, the prize is to do a new code to solve. I just ask that it's not crazy hard. At least as difficult as this one or slightly harder.
