Fluoridation?

Okay, so my town will be voting on whether or not to continue fluoridation of our water supply this week. On my weekly trip to the transfer station (dump) I was given a pamphlet on the "con" side of the argument, which seemed pretty compelling. I don't know much about the issue, and rather than research it myself through credible sources, I thought I'd first go here.

Anyone here have an opinion, either rational or delusional?

Re: Fluoridation?

I'd vote against it because it would cause a lot of weird things to happen in your state.

Oh wait, that's Floridation, not flouridation. Never mind.

Re: Fluoridation?

Floridation is the legalization of bath salts and flakka.

Flouridation is good for your teeth, but perhaps unnecessary. I will say my dental health went down a bit after I switched water filters and to mostly bottled water.

As long as this movement isn't brought to you by Dentists who want more customers, then let the water company save their money while charging you the same amount.

Re: Fluoridation?

Do you remember the old toothpaste commercials where a kid comes home from his dentist and says triumphantly, "I only got one cavity"? That was life before fluoridation: dentists would have to fill new cavities in your mouth every six months. My grandmother had so many fillings in her teeth by the age of 65 that they couldn't be repaired anymore. Her teeth had to be removed.

Re: Fluoridation?

No fluoride where I live. Every dental visit for my teenage son = 4 cavities filled (usually 2 but they're between teeth so they affect the neighboring tooth and get billed as 4.) Every god damn time.

Yeah, I've never had a cavity. Happy with the fluoride in NY water.

Re: Fluoridation?

I remember back in early grade school they had us "swishing" fluoride.
Along the years I read a lot on fluoride and I am convinced that it is not as good for your teeth as they say and certainly not something that is good for our body.

I think it's a waste of resource either way. How many people actually drink tap water? Your toothpaste already has it so you cant count using tap water to brush as a group. It's known that too much can be harmful so getting double dose probably isn't a good idea.

Re: Fluoridation?

i believe autism causes fluoride, so i avoid both if possible, to be safe.

i used fluoride in everything tooth related, from toothpaste to mouthwashes for a long time. now i split the difference and use some non fluoridated toothpastes and washes, and some that are. i think it is avoiding sugars and brushing/ flossing that are important in preventing cavities, not fluoride.

my short answer if that i have cut down, but not completely eliminated. i sometimes use NY tap sometimes giant vats of bottled.

Re: Fluoridation?

On a side issue, regularly chewing Xylitol gum is a very effective way to minimize the bacteria in your mouth that causes plaque on your teeth.

Re: Fluoridation?

I've seen cons for fluoride before, but it sounded to me like New Age pseudo-science. Basically, the argument is that it calcifies the pineal gland in the brain and keeps it from functioning properly. The pineal gland is believed to be the "third eye" and allegedly produces DMT, which is the same hallucinogen found in ayahuasca.

Re: Fluoridation?

From everything I've experienced and read, there's nothing wrong with fluoride in the drinking water.

Paying for bottled water is honestly kinda dumb. Why pay for it when it is easily available for free. Unless you live in a third world country where the water is dirty as shit, then paying for bottled water just seems dumb to me.

But that bottled water comes from a very special place! (The tap water of the bottling facility).

Tap water has a funny taste and sometimes an odor where I live.

Call me as dumb as you want, I dislike the funny after taste from tap water and the odor when my nose is in the cup, it is kinda gross. I have found that even some of the cheapest bottled water from Costco (like $3.79 for 35 - 16.9oz bottles) has no odor and has a good taste. Less trouble for me than a built in style filter.

Small price to pay to not be grossed out by the water you drink
but YMMV, I realize some people have clean tasting nice smelling tap water, but some of us are not that lucky.

I do also use Brita pitchers and filters, but they do not do as good a job removing the 'disinfectants' used here as I would like.

http://water.epa.gov/drink/contamina...infectants.cfm

(read over the health effects in the above link)

as a bonus, it is nice having clean bottled water on hand for all kinds of reasons. The 'boil warnings' always come with no notice.

Re: Fluoridation?

I drink bottled water when I travel, because tap water often tastes funny to me. At home, I drink tap water.
