Have you ever eaten a yellowish secretion from a beaver's butt?

If you've ever eaten a vanilla-flavored food, yes you have.

http://www.honeycolony.com/article/n...-beavers-butt/

And because beaver's assholes are found in nature, they can list beaver asshole secretion as a "natural flavor" on the label.

“natural flavors come from nature, but not necessarily from what the label implies. For example, strawberry and vanilla flavor can come from the gland in a beaver’s backside.”

That gland is filled with Castoreum, described on Wikipedia as the “yellowish secretion of the castor sac in combination with the beaver’s urine.” According to a study published in the International Journal of Toxicology, the substance has been “used extensively in perfumery and has been added to food as a flavor ingredient for at least 80 years.”

Re: Have you ever eaten a yellowish secretion from a beaver's butt?

The article mentions it is used in strawberry flavoring too. So strawberry flavoring isn't actually strawberry... It's beaver pee flavoring.

What I really want to know is how they first discovered beaver pee could be used as food flavoring. Were a bunch of scientists just sitting around one day and decided to drink some beaver pee?

I think they were just talking about "Angry Video Game Nerd" brand vanilla flavoring.

I feel like there's a hip new product in here somewhere. Just say what it is. "Beaver Butt Vanilla".

By this point, I'd think everyone would fact check anything they read on the internet that strains credulity.

From that snopes link:

Getting a beaver to produce castoreum for purposes of food processing is tough. Foodies bent on acquiring some of the sticky stuff have to anesthetize the animal and then "milk" its nether regions.

"You can milk the anal glands so you can extract the fluid," [Joanne] Crawford [a wildlife ecologist at Southern Illinois University] said. "You can squirt [castoreum] out. It's pretty gross."

Due to such unpleasantness for both parties, castoreum consumption is rather small.

Now I can't get the image of a beaver milk farm out of my head. Instead of a cow farm, it is a beaver farm.

It also reminds me of that scene in Meet the Parents where Ben Stiller is talking about milking his cat and saying you can milk anything with nipples. Robert Deniro then says, "I have nipples, Greg. Can you milk me?"

I read that. It cites a June 2011 survey that says five flavoring companies don't use beaver ass in foods. But that 60 minutes piece was from November 2011.

If there's a contradiction, I'll go with the most recent story.

Vanilla means gland, not bland. Pass the secrete.

But there is no contradiction between Snopes & the 60 Minutes piece. The person in the 60 Minutes story didn’t say that castoreum is used by any companies in their flavorings. He stated, as an example of the fact that things can taste wholly unlike what you’d expect, that castoreum can be used in vanilla and strawberry flavorings. The Snopes piece openly states as much, but points out almost no one actually uses it for that due to impracticalities and the general gross factor. The natural foods nazi took the 60 Minutes statement and a 2007 study saying that castoreum is safe for consumption and deduced ‘OMG, if someone says natural flavors, it’s got beaver ass juice in it!’, despite nothing to indicate that's actually the case.

My mom always had Fletcher's Castoria around when I was younger. I guess the fact that it's a laxative makes more sense now. I mean, you never hear about beavers being constipated, right?

That could also explain why women's beavers are so delicious.

If they didn't write me up for a point at work that didn't expire for a year, I would go throw up in the bathroom and ask to be sent home to cope with this horrifying news. I will never be the same again.

If that's the new Ben & Jerry's flavor, I'll pass.
