Co-worker breaks down after cologne remark...thoughs?

I work in a school as a custodian with 4 other guys, grown men all over 40. We constantly bust each other's balls and no one takes it personally. One of the guys in our crew is a 50 yr old Hatian dude with very poor English who kind of keeps to himself... that douses himself in cologne every day. Lately it's gotten worse to the point where any equipment he uses smells like his cologne. I made a comment to him yesterday, said "you wearing cologne"!? He says "no, why" in kind of a serious tone so I said never mind. Tonight, before the end of our shift, my supervisor made a remark to him also joking around and I chime in mentioning how I asked him about that last night & the guy flipped out on both of us, disappeared for a couple of minutes, and returns with obvious signs that he was crying! I have worked with this man for a few years and felt bad that he was upset so I apologized but got no response. This just happened about an hour ago so I felt like sharing...thoughts?

Strange that he would fly off the handle after a couple of innocuous remarks. The supervisor should sit him down and reiterate that neither of you meant any offense.
On the other hand, many workplaces nowadays are "fragrance-free" because of allergies, so perhaps he really should be told to cut back on it.

We are custodians in an elementary school, for any of us to wear cologne (especially the way this guy does) IMO is just weird. Regardless, it doesn't bother me or any of the other guys.

Maybe he doesn't wear cologne, and is sensitive that he smells like an overpowering flower?

He's in a foreign country and probably feels like an outsider in your group. Don't bring up the cologne again.

Obviously after seeing how he reacted I wouldnt bring it up again. But he's been working with us long enough to see how we are with each other as far as joking around goes to take anything like that personally.

Did you ask him mockingly, while limping your wrist and going, "woooo"? Did you also call it "perfume", and not cologne? Did you then saunter around saying, "Oooohooo, look at me, I'm the Haitian janitor and I wear perfume. La-di-da!" Did any of that happen? Be honest.

Maybe he came over on a boat loaded with Hatian refugees. They were locked in the hold and several died during the crossing. The living were forced to sit among the rotting, stinking corpses of the dead. He needs the cologne to cover up the smell which he can't get out of his mind. He needs to cologne to keep it together and not hack his work buddies to death with a machete.

The cologne was a gift from a dear relative (or perhaps one of his children) that he has not seen in a very long time (or may have even passed away). The tears weren't because you mocked the cologne itself but rather they were a reflection of the pain he feels in regards to what that cologne represents to him. He's crying over his longing for the person of whom the cologne reminds him.

Maybe he was sad because you couldn't tell it was perfume and not cologne.

Maybe there's a translation of the word "cologne" and he thought you meant something different?

"You smell like a rapist." perhaps?

That or the cologne had special meaning to him? I dunno, some people think they're getting picked on anytime somebody brings something "different" up about them.

Teach him the appropriate American response to that question:

"No, I just finished banging your wife"

Sure, make fun of the guy who smells better than you. Shame.

Not sure how to answer the question in the thread title, but I'll try. Your co-worker may be pulling your chain, though it's possible he is overly sensitive about these things... ?
