When Interviews go bad

Watching the Downey Jr Interview led me to more awkward interviews,
so I thought hey this could be a thread!
After all we create threads about anything

Re: When Interviews go bad

I don't see why the guy had to bring up RDJ's past or dad for that same. This is public knowledge that he talked about years ago. Why even bring it up again. I also don't think he "stormed" out as much as his publicist said it was done. I thought RDJ was very patient with the guy

Re: When Interviews go bad

Well, I'll post this yet again, because I just adore it. Vidal's unruffled hauteur, Flanner's impish dignity, and Cavett's increasing delight at countering Mailer's boorish pomposity. I especially enjoy Cavett's expertly droll handling of the situation post-"finger bowls".
"Who wants to grab this on our team?"
"(Glances over, mock-quizzically) ...Uh, am I on the right track? Am I warm?"

The guy thinks his job is to dig up salacious dirt on people to create spectacular headlines like "Robert Downey Jr. says he may use drugs again" in the Daily Mail etc. . He obviously went to the Piers Morgan School of obnoxious interviewing.

Re: When Interviews go bad

Not the interviewer's fault -- Denzel seemed to have a bug up his ass here:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aAKCQammecg?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Also love the interview were Christina Hendricks took offense at being called full-figured (twice), but I can't find the clip just now.

Thanks for posting that. I hadn't seen it before. I knew that Gore Vidal was good with a knife, but I didn't know Dick Cavett could get that sharp.

After a minute or so, Mailer is down to one audience member who applauds him.

In fairness to Mailer, he knew he was sailing into unfriendly waters, so he came out with a chip on his shoulder and, according to later interviews with Cavett, quite a bit of booze in his system. Even so, it's lovely to see those three tear into his stubborn, humourless hubris.

Re: When Interviews go bad

Who can forget this classic:

Billy Bob was an asshole in this interview (though he has redeemed himself by continuing to be an awesome actor), but of course, now we know Jian Ghomeshi is an even bigger asshole.

Re: When Interviews go bad

I recall coming home from a night out drinking with mates, turning on the TV and this being broadcast back in 1991. It was a glorious hours TV (i seem to recall it went to black after about 50 mins as i believe it was broadcast live) due to Ollie being his drunken fantastic self. The others are a set of bores, but Ollie livens it up.

I thought RDJ handled himself just fine. The reporter was a dickwad.

Re: When Interviews go bad

In the early 80s David Letterman had an old rockabilly guy on his show who I had never heard of. He was drunk and surly. It was a horrible interview. But I can't remember his name.

When I saw Jerry Lawler slap Andy Kaufman on Letterman in 1982, I couldn't figure out whether it was an act or not. It bugged me for days.

Now it looks totally fake to me.

Lawler and Andy had it all planned out, Letterman had no idea it was a work and was legitimately upset.

Re: When Interviews go bad

You know an interview's bad when Dick Cavett, Mel Brooks and Rex Reed combined can't get the person to say anything interesting.

Re: When Interviews go bad

Andy's foray into wrestling (often women), and his taunting of the crowds was pure awesomeness.
