Sounds like fun. I'm a huge Star Wars fan. Will Captain Kirk be there? Hand Solo?

No, I'm 1500 miles away. I will be on my knees, begging the Lord in vain for an announcement about the OOT though.

I went to II. It was pretty fun, but back then I was still all about SW. Not sure I would drop the coin to go again.

A friend of mine is going all four days. She's a big fan. Going to some cosplay thing down there as well (well besides the big cosplay event that Celebration is).

My dad took me to that when I was fifteen. It was my first convention of any kind. We had three day passes, but the crowds were already so large on Friday that he made us leave after six hours (all spent standing around in the autograph hall and vendor area). I attended no panels, no exhibits -- nothing.

I'm still a little bummed I missed Carrie Fisher, who wasn't appearing until the next day. I know she does a shitload of conventions, but I would have only been paying about $30 (or two autograph tickets) for her signature back then.

Re: Star Wars Celebration 2015

I went to I think the first one - months before Episode I was released. It was small, held at an old air base in Colorado with tents outside and a small exhibition hall.

There were some 501 guys out there, and a few of them I recognized when I returned to NY on the Ziegfeld line in Manhattan. (My office building was next door to the theater)

I flew out there with some college buddies, rented a car.. and we even slept in the car one night. The event was not at all crowded by today's standards. No big celebrities - all we got was the producer Rick Mcullum, actors who played jar jar, darth maul, and some costume designers.

However, the big highlight was that they would sell the toys at the event. We stood in the rain waiting to get into a trailer / anex building to buy the figures.

When I got in there - I felt a tug on my jacket and someone said "which is your favorite, I like this guy (holding up Anikin Skywalker)" I looked down and it was Jake Loyd !! he was there with his mom, brothers, and sisters to buy the figures. I took a picture with him, and his mom smiled - they were all excited.

We expected the event to be a big celebration with tons of costumes etc.. we even slept in the car the first night thinking the place would be a mob scene in the morning.. but it wasn't..

That story makes me a little sad. Loyd was just a little kid who was excited about the opportunity of a lifetime and in subsequent years it just all went to hell for him thanks to all of the a-holes out there giving him a hard time as if it was his fault that TPM sucked.

I met Lloyd at a convention last month. I spotted him entering the main hall and he kind of shot me (in my opinion) a dirty look when he noticed I was pointing him out to my brother. He was thin and had bleached his hair almost platinum blonde. No one was in his autograph line when I got to his table and he was only charging $20, though he wanted an extra $10 for a photo op with your camera. I think guests charging fans to take photos after they buy autographs is bullshit -- but being the geek that I am, I paid for both. I'm not posting the photo, but Jake is making a weird face in it. Not a smile... more like a smirk that says "I can't believe this dork just paid me for this."

I'd heard he was a bitter, sarcastic guy these days. He was pleasant enough toward me, but I guess it depends on the type of fan he's encountering. I told him I'd watched TPM in theaters sixteen times when it was first released (hey, I was 12). He told me he'd seen it twenty-six times and had soundly beaten my record. I thought "Yeah, but you got to go on a worldwide publicity tour and attend the royal premiere. I used my allowance money." I told him I went back and saw the 3D release, making my count seventeen. He misheard me and asked "Wait... you're 17?" Either I look younger than my age or he thought I was full of shit, but I corrected him. Then I said that seeing it in 3D by yourself as an adult was probably worse than watching it that many times as a kid -- which likely came off as an insult. Oops...

Did you ask him to shout his signature line of "Yippee!"?

200.00 for a picture with Hamill and Fisher. 125 for hamills autograph? People pay that kind of money?
