Do YOU have Misophonia?

http://www.misophonia.com/
Do you have an intense emotional reaction to hearing someone eating with their mouth open, sneezing, coughing, sniffling or chewing? Do you feel enraged when someone makes repetitive noises like tapping, clicking a pen, typing on a keyboard, eating crunchy foods or making other sounds that make you want to run away or lash out at the source of the sound? Have you wondered why you experience these reactions and sensitivities and wonder if you are the only one who has these problems? When your “trigger events” occur, does it seem like other people don’t take any notice to the sounds that affect you so strongly? Guess what…
Because I sure do!
I sit near someone at work who eats and drinks INCREDIBLY loudly, and it immediately causes me to tense up. If I'm not already wearing my earphones, I have to grab them right away and start playing music to calm the fuck down. Sometimes, I just have to walk away. What's weird is, NONE of the other things in the list above bother me. It's only the loud open-mouthed chewing.

So... are you a Misophoniac? What triggers you to want to break things?

Re: Do YOU have Misophonia?

Really? I didn't even search (sorry.) If you're right, the mods can lock this one.

This isn't just a "pet peeve" thing. This is an irrational emotional and physical response to... annoying things.

So yeah... maybe it IS a pet peeve thing.

What about people sucking on a straw to get the last milliliter of soda out of the cup?

I have that reaction to any noise coming out of a personal device, whether music, a ring tone, sounds from a TV show or someone talking.

Re: Do YOU have Misophonia?

I don't go to movies anymore. Besides people being rude, they are noisey pigs who can't go without food for 2 fucking hours, chompin, lip smacking, making so much noise putting their fat hands in bags.

I think this misophonia is is just a label for people who are afraid to be classified as unbearable pricks." Im sorry I snapped at your piggish ways, I have misophonia". Please, you're an asshole just like me.

Besides Macy Gray's voice (which make Hulk Smash), I don't think I go beyond normal annoyance when subjected to such sounds.

Though I do recall a fellow who bit down on his fork with each bite, pulling it out with an audible metallic scrape and ping. [shudder]

I just can't stand it when people leave the clicking sound on their phones when they use the keypad. Hate it.

Chewing food, for sure. And I hate to hear myself doing it. I try not to think about it. And usually eat alone. Because I hate having to eat like a gentleman.

Where does it come from? Probably my mom. "Smacking your mouth" was a huge deal at the dinner table while growing up. I was usually the one doing it. But my stupid parents perpetuated the problem by making a big deal about it.

Re: Do YOU have Misophonia?

No. There's a litany of things that send me into an irrational rage, but I am not misphonic.

Slightly related, but I hate when people talk loudly on the phone (or even worse, on speaker), as if everyone else in the vicinity needs to be silent and listen to their fucking conversation.

Re: Do YOU have Misophonia?

Frickin' Kit Kat commercials where they're all crunching and slobbering over the food.
People who whistle in public.
TV anchors who are always tapping their pen on the desk while they're trying to make a point.
Any TV commercial where something about computers is mentioned, followed by the sound of a dial-up modem and someone typing quickly.
Beverage commercials where you hear the glug-glug of a glass being filled.

Re: Do YOU have Misophonia?

Perhaps. I do get extremely annoyed by people making repetitive noises for extended periods of time (more than about 30 minutes).

One coworker in particular annoyed the hell out of me by constantly making noise. The person would be doing one of the following at least half of the time: sniffing, sighing, mumbling, chewing/snacking, tapping, squeezing a hand spring (stress reliever device), or pounding on the keyboard. I was pretty excited when the person finally moved to another room. I don't see or even think about the person most days now. YES!

Not everyone annoys me; only certain people. The person I initially shared a room with did not bother me one bit, and the current person only bothers me once in a while when sniffing for extended periods.

I've been told that sometimes people don't even know whether I'm in my cubicle because I'm so quiet. Once in a while, I'll crack my knuckles. Other than that, I don't make noise. I just sit there and do my work. I don't get why certain people can't do the same.

I can't stand to hear a clock ticking. It's worse than a dripping faucet, it's hard for me to understand how other people can block that noise out while it is driving me insane.

Not only does that jingle make me want to throw my radio out the window, the organization itself is highly questionable (do a G search).

I'm guessing the Carl's Junior commercials drive you up the wall, too.

I don't like hearing people chew or swallow, and find it kind of irritating. I don't think I have an intense reaction though.
