Why does a Subaru WRX have such MASSIVE mud flaps?

Do they kick up more debris than most vehicles?

Big spiders. They need somewhere to hide.

Re: Why does a Subaru WRX have such MASSIVE mud flaps?

Because they never know when they'll find themselves on a rally course.

Re: Why does a Subaru WRX have such MASSIVE mud flaps?

Subaru is actually the division of a Japanese company (Fuji). Not Australian.

I thought WRXs had wraparound "ground effect" cladding, not mudflaps.

Re: Why does a Subaru WRX have such MASSIVE mud flaps?

The Subaru Legacy is actually called the Subaru 'Liberty' in its home-country of Australia. The Subaru AWD system was developed specifically so their vehicles could cross the outback (which they also named one of their vehicle after). The mud flaps are needed to prevent build-up of red mud during the Australian wet season.

If you look above the passenger seat of any Subaru, you will actually see a bracket for holding a boomerang. Been that way for years.

Re: Why does a Subaru WRX have such MASSIVE mud flaps?

When you say "outback" are you referring to their driveways?

Re: Why does a Subaru WRX have such MASSIVE mud flaps?

The Legacy/Outback has always been made in Japan. It was inspired by the outback but Subaru has always been more into promoting it`s rally history; not unlike Mitsubishi which is their main competitor after Audi was banned.

I can't tell if your being sarcastic or not...anyways, I was assuming not too many here follow racing or know how bad ass Subaru was in the 90's under Colin McRae. Makes me wonder why rally racing has never gained traction in the U.S. It's more like old bootleg racing than NASCAR; which evolved from bootlegging.

You want to see some real driving check out the old group B rally videos on youtube. Dangerous for both drivers and spectators....group B was eventually banned because people were getting killed.

Nope. Never heard of Audi being banned from rally racing. Or that Subaru is a Japanese company.

Wait a second. Do many people actually think Subaru is an Australian company? Is that because one of their vehicle lines is named the Outbook and their Forester commercials featured Crocodile Dundee?

Most people are NOT into cars. They couldn't care less. I envy them.

I've owned an outback for 13 years and figured it was just a japanese company. Also, i've been just sitting my boomerang on the passenger seat instead of using the holder!

Count me as one that is baffled that people think it's an Australian car.
