Things to see and do in Miami?

The family is thinking about going to Miami for the day and ending it with a Heat game. If we get to Miami in the morning, what things should we go and see?

I like Hollywood beach. You could probably rent a bike there and hang out at the beach, stop at a few tourist beach shops.Hopefully weather is good that day.

^I agree with the above, that's by far far the best Miami has to offer

Las Olas, CocoWalk, Wynwood/Art District, and my favorite thing to do in my free time - biking to Key Biscayne.

Anyway, as far as Miami is concerned, it all depends what you enjoy doing.

For my money (as someone who lived in Miami from 1972 - 2007 and still lives a county away) if you want to simply enjoy the scenery, you can't do better than Key Biscayne. Forget Miami Beach, this is the most beautiful area of the county. The view over the Rickenbacker (with Biscayne Bay on one side and the Intracoastal on the other) is absolutely breathtaking. For recreation someone recommended renting a bike, which I highly recommend, but there's sailing, jetskiing, kayaking, and other water-sports throughout the area. Or you could hit the Seaquarium (where "Flipper" was filmed) and enjoy a day at a Sea World-styled experience. Crandon Beach is beautiful, as is Cape Florida, Hobie Beach, or Virginia Key. Plenty of good lunch and dinner spots too. Rusty Pelican used to be really good; nowadays it's OK, but it has a killer outdoor view of Brickell and Downtown Miami.

Another option is to head down to Coconut Grove for lunch. It's a fine pedestrian area with lots to choose from. Then hop in the car and take Old Hwy/Old Cutler Road south into Coral Gables and visit Fairchild Tropical Garden. On a nice day it's absolutely stunning there. If you're in the mood for a swim and want to try something different (or are beached out), check out the Venetian Pools in Coral Gables. Make sure it's a hot day, because that natural water can get cold!

If you have kids and you want something fun to do with them, you could always check out Jungle Island, which is off the main road (I-395 / McArthur Causeway) which connects the mainland to Miami Beach. There's also a Children's Museum across the road from them.

Yes and of course, South Beach and all that huzzah is there too. Pretty much everyone can have fun there at any age level. Me, I can't stand the place. I prefer the much more laid back scene up in Ft. Lauderdale. Twenty years ago, that was a different story.

This thread could be useful since I plan to go to Miami for the Texans/Dolphins game next season.

OK just checked, the Venetian Pools are closed for the winter (November - March). Oh well. Check out Coral Gables anyhow. Hit the Biltmore and check out the haunted floors.

Re: Things to see and do in Miami?

My friend and I sneaked into the Biltmore when we were younger. Maybe that's why they thought it was haunted...
