Small rock hit my windshield...

Had a small rock fly onto my windshield cracking it a bit. I've never had that ever happen before. Damn thing sounded like gun shot. I thought it was somebody's muffler going all kinds of bad. So how much does it cost to fix something like this? Also how long does that take usually?

Check to see if your insurance covers a cracked windshield. Windshield repair companies can come to your home and replace it, it might take 30 min or so.

Re: Small rock hit my windshield...

if you have full glass coverage, just punch that fucker, make it huge and get a replacement. otherwise, they might have a place you can take it or an on-site windshield repair place do it, which will be a repair, not a replacement. every insurance company is different in what they require to replace a windshield. most car washes have guys that will approach you too if they see cracks.

Re: Small rock hit my windshield...

Yeah, that looks small enough to be a repair, if your insurance is paying for it.

If you have to pay for it, windshield costs vary. Last time I had to have one replaced was on an Escort and it cost about $130. I took it to the shop but, as was mentioned, they can come to your home or work. An old girlfriend had hers replaced while she was at work. She never even came out to the car. They replaced while she was working.

Re: Small rock hit my windshield...

Just like everyone else has said. I had the same thing happen to me about 7 or 8 yeas ago on my old car. It started off as a ding that small, but over the course of a week it expanded and ended up consuming the whole windshield. I think it cost about $120, but the guy came to my apartment and did it in the parking lot.

Sucks when the windows on your house break.

Pft. Wait till it turns into a full crack. And then wait a few more years to see if it limits your visibility. If it doesn't, just leave it.

That's the state of my windshield crack. A single pebble in the middle. Turned into a vertical crack, right in the center. Doesn't limit visibility. And has been there for years.

From that pic it does look like something that can be repaired quickly. Otherwise if you have to replace it, always ask for OEM. Some of the aftermarket glass is cheaper but most are made in China and is of lower quality. Research it and then decide.

Don't all insurance companies fix this for free, so they don't have to pay more down the line to replace the whole windshield? They'll send someone to you and fix it on the spot.

If your state has an annual car inspection, some states would not pass that crack.

In my area it's $30 to get it fixed. Takes about 10 minutes.

Same here. I still can see the pick-up truck in front of me on Hwy 35 in Austin that kicked up the rock that hit my winshield about 7 years ago. Got a small horizontal crack to the right center of my windshield. As long as its not in my eye-line of eyesight when I drive, I don't even think about it. It hasn't gotten any bigger over the years either, thankfully.

Texas does not care(at least for safety inspection) windshield could be craven, shattered or even not there at all and it will still pass. But ripped, torn or streaking wiper blades and it will fail

That's not a crack. That's a butthole.

Does that actually exist in some states? What a utopia that must be. I'd love for those inspectors to visit California and look at hunks of shit we tolorate on our roads.

New York requires yearly inspections but I don't believe they look for windshield cracks. I think it's about how it all runs under the hood.

Re: Small rock hit my windshield...

You can get a ticket here for a cracked windshield. Also you're not supposed to be able to take a driver's license test in a car that has one.

I use Safelite, which is covered by my AAA insurance plan. Had to use them twice and didn't have to pay anything out of pocket.

Quick service. So far the cracks haven't grown bigger (it's been about 5-7 years now). Safelite is legit.

Illinois is this way as well. Doesn't matter where the crack is or if it actually obstructs your view.

The most important thing is to decide what you are doing and do it quickly. A "bullseye" can be very inexpensive to repair IF you get it before it starts to "spider-web" (crack more).

Re: Small rock hit my windshield...

What about those big stickers? They obstruct the view more than the butthole crack in your windshield!

Re: Small rock hit my windshield...

Just Google windshield repair in your area. I did that, found a guy who does it for $10 per chip/crack. Took maybe 5 minutes. I had that done a month or two ago and no sign of the chip, so he did good work.
