I didn't take the bus until middle school but there was never a parent at the bus stop. Now all I see are parents waiting at the bus stop with their kids or the kids waiting in their parents car for the bus to arrive. I would assume the same thing happens in the afternoon too with parents their waiting.
I wonder if this "an adult constantly around" environment is adding to kids "escaping" into the world of phones, texts, online, etc.. thus adding to the lack of communication skills in this generation?

As a kid, I wanted to be away from my parents and teachers and looked forward to the time I would explore and interact with kids on my own.

Re: Things Done In School When You Were A Kid That Wouldn't Fly Today

I went to school in Indiana in the 60's and 70's. I remember in first grade we were given thin, glass straws with our milk cartons. After a few incidents of kids biting the straws and getting cut we drank from the carton. I remember using those guillotine paper cutters to make Christmas decorations in middle school and lots of sharp knives and implements in cooking and art classes. I hated jumping hurdles in gym class on a cinder track because if you fell you ended up with cinders embedded in your knees. There were some good things about those times though, the lunch ladies actually cooked and baked real meals. We could walk home from school or ride our bikes to town without worrying that something was going to happen to us.

Late 70's, we had a smoking area in middle school and high school. We had an open campus during high school where students would leave during free period and cruise around getting high and drink and then come back to school. We also did model rocketry. I think it was in middle school. A friend make a mace and a bong in shop class. In elementary school we sang antiwar songs.

I almost forgot... I lived in England for awhile as a kid and -- in what would be the equivalent of Kindergarten over there -- they had gym class where all the kids (boys and girls) had to undress to our underpants to do exercises, jumping jacks and whatnot, presumably so we didn't mess up our nice school clothes. Didn't think much of it at the time (and this was in the 70s) but now it seems insane.

I was sort of kidding above, but the more I read these posts the more I wonder if the wave of school shootings in the last 15 years might arise from the over-supervised nature of school today and the suppression of kids' letting off steam in other ways or learning how to figure things out for themselves. Some important stages of development are being ignored or suppressed and some kind of frustration builds up that lets itself out in a violent manner in some isolated souls. Just a thought...

Are Rocketry clubs actually banned/outlawed in schools nowadays? That's a damn shame. God forbid students learn something about construction, engineering, patience, determination, aerodynamics, etc.

I too remember taking smoke breaks between classes or during lunch/study hall behind the school. No one cared. Everyone seemed to turn out just fine. I mean, except those who ended up with heart disease, emphysema, lung cancer, etc. but that's called thinning out the herd.

I would note that all the teachers were female, but these days that's almost worse.

During breaks between classes, we'd often fuck the shit out of our teachers. That would never fly in today's PC society.

Back in the day, I certainly wouldn't have gotten a "nice work" sticker for a D+ like on this recent quiz.

I'm surprised they haven't completely done away with the letter grade 'F' because they don't want to make any child feel as if they've failed at something.

My sister made my watch video of my niece's school's Halloween party. I got a good laugh as I listened to the teacher explain the rules of the dance contest: "Okay, so everyone start dancing and I'll be watching you. We're going to pick one boy and one girl who dances the best... um, no, not the best. We're going to pick one boy and one girl who... um, will win a prize."

Further to this, my uncle (still alive at a hearty 94) reports that during high school gym class, all the swimming was done naked, males only. And if a kid was caught cheating / not doing the number of laps requested, another kid was chosen by the gym instructor to administer punishment of raspings (= ruler to the buttocks) to the cheating offender. 1 whip for each lap cheated. So, if a kid was caught not doing 10 laps out of 40 required, he got 10 whippings, NAKED, and by a fellow student...

This was in LA in the mid-1930s, public school -- Inglewood High... And no there wasn't a single Negro in his entire high school in those days. It was a very respectable city then.

White kids raped other white kids in LA in the 1930's? Yeah, things were not always better back then.

Re: Things Done In School When You Were A Kid That Wouldn't Fly Today

In middle school early 90s my gym teacher would join in on dodgeball. He would whip the ball so fast we swore it pulsated, he probably gave a concussion or two.

I also remember in high school in the mid 90's, a kid said something the gym teacher didnt like, the teacher took a basketball at hit him at pointblank range in the head with it. He then grabbed the guy and took him outside, where the principal was smoking, and the two proceeded to rough the kid up.

No banned in my area but after middle school those kids move to robotics.

Re: Things Done In School When You Were A Kid That Wouldn't Fly Today

Mid '80s:

Principal who was an ex-Marine drill sergeant, would bring kids in to be paddled with this big paddle with holes drilled throughout to increase air flow / it could be swung quicker. He called it the "board of education". When he would swat kids (who always deserved it, he was a very fair guy) you could hear the swats throughout the school.

Same principal gave a kid who brought a loaded handgun to school a three day in-school suspension (he had been threatened, brought it to protect himself).

A classmate built a full-size, functional guillotine for a French class project.

Some students would be outside the main doors smoking during lunch hour. Sometimes a teacher would tell them to go across the street but most of the time they were against the school wall near the doors.

We would take showers, nude of course, after PE. Boys and girls separate of course, unfortunately. In my son's school they don't take showers.

Re: Things Done In School When You Were A Kid That Wouldn't Fly Today

I graduated from a rural Georgia high school in 1981.

We had a skeet shooting team and we'd often practice during school hours on the football field. We had hunter safety courses where we were allowed to bring our rifles to school.

It was a common sight to see pickup trucks with fully loaded gun racks in the school parking lot. No one even gave it a second thought. It never even crossed my mind that someone might go nuts and go on a shooting/killing spree.
