YATT: What is going on with my plumbing?

Yet another toilet thread...

I recently bought a new toilet. Low flow, blah blah. Of course after a few months there was a blockage. Roto Rooter came in and cleaned out the pipes. Everything worked fine. Here we go again though. The toilet bowl will fill with water when flushed, then take forever to go down. If it sits for a few hours, it flushes with no problem. I've plunged and augered and nothing seems to be blocked in there. This is making my volcanic morning shits problematic. Anyone have a clue what is causing this? It's gotten really frustrating.

Any other issues in the house? We have roots growing into our drainage system and I have to put those copper crystals down the toilet three times a year to keep them flowing.

Roots are a possibility. What are these crystals you speak of?

Possibly an issue with your vent stack?

Sounds like you have a block in your main pipe and Roto Rooter just cleaned out a closer blockage.

You might have to have someone comeout with one of those pipeline cameras to see what is going on down there.

Are any other toilets or drains affected? If it was roots, I'd think you'd see back-up everywhere, not just in the toilet.

I can hear gurgling in my toilet when the tub drains. I can also hear it in the kitchen sinks.

Anyone else do what I did and start reading the post, not noticing the OP, think it's a normal, reasonable post, only to hit the volcanic activity part and think, oh, this is EddieMoney?

Re: YATT: What is going on with my plumbing?

Probably a blockage caused by all the semen you keep heeling down the shower drain.

If it's not actually backing up at the other sources, I'd lean towards it being a problem with the toilet itself or the pipe connecting it to the main drain. When you say the toilet bowl fills with water, does it empty, then fill and take a while to go down? Or does it just start going up and slowly drain afterwards? If it's the former, I'd say it's something with the toilet itself. Disclaimer, I'm not a plumber, though I have dealt with a couple bad toilets and various other plumbing problems over the course of two houses.

I assumed the thread title was going to be less literal.

Fucking plumbing, man. No matter what plumbing project I take on, I always end up with three more problems before I'm done. It's threaded pipes that lock together, how difficult does it have to be?

It just starts going up and slowly drains after.

If you want to rule out roots, turn the tub on full blast for 5 minutes or so. If it doesn't start draining more slowly, it's probably a safe bet to assume its the pipe from the toilet to the drain. One idea would be to check that pipe to make sure it maintains a downward slope. We had a slow drain that would often clog and it turned out that when they built the house, they actually had installed the pipe from the sink to the main drain with it sloping slightly towards the sink, meaning it would never fully empty and was prone to back-ups and clogs. If you can identify and access the pipe from a crawlspace or basement, it's easy to check it with a simple level.

We also find them at Meijer. Might be at Ace Hardware or similar stores.

Masturbation is not the answer to this too.

I had this happen at the previous place we lived at. It was the run to the kitchen sink which sloped upwards. After many years (from before us living there) the pipe finally clogged completely. Fortunately the kitchen was over the garage ... I tore open the garage ceiling and "thumped" the pipe to find the clog. I ended up cutting an 8 foot section out of the pipe. It was packed solid with 30+ years of gunk. There is only one thing I have ever smelled which smelled worse (it was a dead body which had been sitting in an attic for a few August days).

Anyway, this is possible, but not likely unless the other drains in the same bathroom are backing up also.

I'd try a heavy duty chemical (not an off the shelf chemical; something more like muriatic acid) to see if you can flush the pipe out. By your description, it sounds as if the problem is specifically in the toilet plumbing, not the bathroom plumbing.

I flushed out the vent stack for a good 10 minutes. Didn't work.
