YAHBT: Can I submit this to my flex spending?

Yet another hospital bill thread...

So we had some hospital bills we got behind on. It went to collections, and then to a law firm. At the time, we were broke as fuck and couldn't make payments. I did make three separate payments over the summer to pay the debt off. My question is this: if this law firm sends me receipts for my payments, can I still submit them to my insurance for flex spending reimbursement? Or am I fucked in the ass?

You're fucked, flexible spending accounts are usually in a certain coverage period, usually 12 months, sometimes you get a couple of extra months as a 'grace' period.

Like Jan 1/14 through Jan 1/15

That's the key. Your FSA is designed to help pay for current health related expenses. Typically you cannot cross over years. Your FSA for 2014 pays for 2014 expenses. But to be absolute sure, you should consult your FSA provider or your company's HR department.

Like others have said, it needs to be from 2014. I'm not sure about other states but in California if you don't use it you lose it at the end of the year.

Yeah, these are from 2012 and 2014. Wonder if they'd still let me submit since there's so much in my account?

If its from 2014 you can submit for reimbursement. Do you still have the original bills?

They don't want you to use the money in your account....so they will stick to the terms, typically 12mon...sometimes 14-15mon if your company was good a negotiating.

Re: YAHBT: Can I submit this to my flex spending?

You could try to submit and say that you did 'pay' the collections company in 2014.

It is worth a shot, and you do have receipts showing the payment in 2014. Some of these flex admins are tough, and others just 'check the box' and pay out as long as you show proof of payment in the date range.

I would give it a try... what is the worst that could happen.. they deny it and you are back in the position you are in?

Another way to approach this is to go to your employer - helps if it is a small / mid size company - explain what is going on and that you will not use all of your flex. When you 'lose' it, it goes back to your employer - who can just pay you that $ back out. We would sometimes do that if there was a BS case where an employee missed a deadline, change in life event, or a claim was denied for some bureaucratic reason.

I agree, some employers will pay a "bonus" to employees if there ends up being flex spending that reverts back to the employer.
