Touch Base Meeting

I have a touch base meeting with my manager and HR this morning. I fear for my job. I told my manager last week that I was ill and have been dealing with a lot of stress at home, so I wonder if it's about that? I am shitting my pants. What are these usually about?

It's about you spending too much time at DVDTalk while you should be working!

In the past if one of my employees told me what you said you told your manager I'd probably set up a touch base meeting as well - just to see how you are doing and if there's anything I can do to help (make sure the stress isn't work related, do you need some time off, etc..). However I wouldn't invite HR.

Well since it's touch base, I'm guessing light fondling.

This has my eyebrow raised as well, unless it's part of an EAP.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

It could just be that they've noticed your stress level increasing. I imagine they just want to say, "Is everything okay? What can we do? We think your performance is being affected so we're here to help, etc. etc." Depending on the size and general culture of the company, inviting HR isn't necessarily a red flag.

Baby hold on, maybe they're just giving you two tickets to paradise. Maybe I'm a fool for thinking this but you seem to be shakin in your boots.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

I can almost envision how this meeting is going...

HR: "How would you rate your work performance?"
EddieMoney: "10/10 would bang"

I'm hoping we don't hear this after the meeting in regards to EM's job:

"It died."

Re: Touch Base Meeting

Any more tardies/absences, and I am gone. They are recommending I apply for FMLA to cover my ass. I never thought the stress from my personal life would affect me to the point where I was feeling sick all the time, but it has happened, and has affected my attendance.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

Tell them you wanna go back and do it all over.

Seriously, make a concerted effort to be on time if the job is important to you. As crappy as life (in and outside your job) can make you feel, that regular paycheck drives the engine that allows you to survive in our society. Don't pee in that Ovaltine.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

How would FMLA work in this case? Are they suggesting you take time off, up to three months, and get yourself together? Sounds like counseling is a good idea, I know my company offers it for free.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

I feel for you Eddie...bad enough you're going through everything, now you've got your bosses on your case as well.

Fortunately, I see my workplace as a refuge from all the stress in my life, so I have a pretty good record. I've only had to take a few days off this year, and they were unavoidable.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

Yeah, my marriage issues are improving lately, but my stepson is close to being expelled from school for behavioral issues, his father was just released from prison, our money is tighter than hell...the stress gets to me and causes this depression that just leaves me feeling sick and helpless.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

Crap EddieMoney, sorry to hear about the smackdown from HR. Try not to get overwhelmed by everything. Take your day in pieces so it will be easier to handle. As others have mentioned, think about work as an escape from the crap in your home life.

Re: Touch Base Meeting

I am dealing with this exact same issue right now. In fact, I just had a meeting about an hour ago with my boss. I got the same speech (HR was not present).

I got approved for intermittent FMLA just last week after a 2-month prolonged battle with one of my doctors trying to justify it. I've had so many occurences due to the issues I'm dealing with I'm not eligible for our departmental bonus, which hurts more but I am very grateful that I still have a job. I'm finally finding ways to manage and deal with said issues, so I'm hoping my FMLA will cover me should anything arise in the near future (I'm eligible for 2 days per month).

It sucks man, but get on that FMLA if you're finding life too difficult sometimes. It's there for a reason.
