So I survived a brain aneurysm / subarachnoid hemorrhage

So... I randomly had suffered what might have been a brain aneurysm (subarachnoid hemmorrhage) last Monday night.

Blinding headache, vomiting, dizziness, etc....I drove myself to the E.R. thinking maybe it was just some sort of crazy migraine and worried that no one was around and I had very poor cell cignal where I was at. Minus a few stops to puke on the side of the road...it was awful.

Was driven BACK to Ann Arbor U of M hospital in an ambulance (good since I was a hundred miles north at my work city when it happened). Spent the week in the hospital under heavy monitoring / low blood pressure, meds to help prevent another brain bleed, etc.

I seem to have lucked out in that they couldn't find the rupture and didn't need surgery. I still feel like I was run over by a truck (metaphorically speaking) - I feel bad for people that get it much worse than me.

I'm hanging out at home recovering slowly now. I've got a killer butt muscle / back ache from laying in the hospital bed, a lingering headache, ringing in my ears that makes guy voices all sound like they've been sucking helium (I think I'm missing the lower frequencies). And I'm fricking exhausted / out of energy (I hear that may linger for a while).

Oh, and screw insurance companies, mine (Aetna) is putting up a fight on paying for anything after day 2 saying I didn't need to be in the NICU based on my blood pressure numbers, etc. Even though everything I read was that they followed the standard protocol (since if I had suffered another bleed in that week I'd have almost certainly died). I'll deal with that down the road when I'm feeling better. Insurance sucks.

Anyone else have experience with something like this? I've done some googling and it sounds like I'll be under the weather for a couple of weeks, possibly a long, long period.

You should look at the positives in this case, you're still alive and can make coherent posts on DVD Talk. I wish you a speedy recovery. Insurance companies never think anything is necessary, though they will slowly back down with enough doctor support.

It sounds like you had a very bad ordeal. All I can recommend is take it very easy, you are probably weaker for the moment than you imagine.

Good god man, that's awful! I'm glad you're still kicking. Do they have any idea what could have caused it?

Eep! Glad you are ok GreenMonkey!

If they didn't find anything I wonder if it was just like a really super bad migrane like you initially thought?

I'm genuinely curious... how is it a GOOD thing that they couldn't find the rupture? That sounds like it would be bad. If they couldn't find it, how would they know how bad it is (or isn't)?

Glad you survived, I had an aneurysm a few years back that caused a series of strokes. It was pretty freaky.

I know, it sounds weird, but they told me that's like 10% - 15% of cases. It means, at least, whatever/wherever it was, it's not bad enough to require surgery to fix.

It seems like I got really lucky - they were joking about me walking laps by the end of the 9 days I was in there. Most of the other folks in the NICU weren't up and walking about (even the other SAH patients).

I've read a lot of stuff that says to stay patient, recovery takes time. I'm lucky my employer has awesome sick policies (unlimited sick time). I can't imagine how someone would deal that wasn't getting paid for weeks of being out of work, all at random.

That sounds more like the less fortunate folks in my hallway. You have any of the side effects afterwards like I've got? Ringing in the ears, etc?

My primary side effect was my vision; I lost some periphreal vision in my upper eyeline and everything looks kind of faded. It's like the world used to be a Pixar movie and now it's Dog Day Afternoon.

My memory also isn't what it once was. But not Memento bad or anything.

Re: So I survived a brain aneurysm / subarachnoid hemorrhage

My wife is terrible paranoid about personality change, as that's a possible side effect. It's funny how she asks if I feel normal or squinting at me when I do something atypical.

She was especially suspicious when I talked to her from the hospital and told her it was OK to get the new iPhone to replace her Nexus 5. I guess that was pretty atypical of me, I'm a cheap bastard when I can be, especially on paying for phones.

Could this have something to do with "The Fappening"?

What causes these?

I remember an MSNBC producer telling his story about having this happen (or something similar). That story always stuck in my head.

To be a little too honest, and it'll make you guys laugh, I was looking at something like that was probably raising my blood pressure right when it happened. But it wasn't Fappening related SPECIFICALLY. I'm pretty traumatized from that, honestly, and I'm not sure when the next time it is that I look at...ahem...content like that again.

I got asked several times if I'd ever done cocaine ("You can tell us, it's OK") or I was a smoker. Apparently those are the two big risk factors, along with family history.

To be sure about the family history, I even called up my mom, who I barely talk to, to make sure we didn't have any of this in my family - and she's got like 16-17 brothers and sisters, so, that's a pretty big sample size - but no history of these, although we do have a history of migraines on her side.
