5 million google accounts exposed - Gmail HACKED

Gmail is a fantastic service that has changed the way much of the world uses email. It was also the target of a big security breach recently that has left 5 million Google customers exposed. Are you one of the unlucky users whose login credentials were compromised?

Here’s how to find out — and what to do if your Google username and password were exposed in the breach.

First and foremost, visit the following website:

https://isleaked.com

Enter your Gmail email address in the field near the top of the screen and you will be notified immediately if your account was exposed in this latest breach. And just to prove to affected users that this is a legitimate issue, the site will display the first two characters of your password if your credentials were leaked.

So, what should you do if your account is now exposed?

Immediately visit the following link:

https://www.google.com/settings/personalinfo

Clicking on the Security tab on this page will allow you to change your password, and you should do so immediately.

Now, whether or not your login was leaked in this most recent hack, you should take this opportunity to enable 2-step authentication on your Google account.

On the same page linked above, the Security tab shows a “2-Step Verification” listing. Click the settings link next to it and you’ll be walked through the setup process. For those who are unaware, 2-step authentication will text a unique temporary security code to a phone number you provide during the setup. Then, that code must be entered each time you log into your Google account from a new device or with a new service.

I checked all my accounts and they appear safe.

Re: 5 million google accounts exposed - Gmail HACKED

For clarification, GMail/Google servers weren't hacked; apparently this is an old list of addresses and passwords through various phishing schemes that were released.

Re: 5 million google accounts exposed - Gmail HACKED

By most reports (and google says) this wasn't actually a gmail hack but a compilation of gmail emails and A password. They're probably password from various forums and smaller websites that were hacked, honestly, since the hit rate on the passwords is pretty low apparently.

Still worth checking, esp. if you use your gmail password as your password elsewhere.

Re: 5 million google accounts exposed - Gmail HACKED

I used the isleaked site, and my email matched and it told me the first 2 characters of the password. It was not the first 2 characters of the gmail password, but it was the first two characters of a password I use elsewhere (I'm not dumb enough to use the same password for gmail that I use to login to other sites with my gmail address, but apparently some people are), so that fits with what's being said. Anyway, off to do some password changing.

That's a relief. Gmail may now proceed to search through my emails at their discretion...

After you reset your password, make sure the NSA has their copy.

That isleaked link is not in English, so I therefore trust it about as far as I can throw it. (Which is not far.)

You need to click the US flag for the English version. Not saying that necessarily makes it better. When I tried it earlier today the link I was given was directly to the English version.

You can always turn on two-factor authentication for Google, though it is a hassle at times.

Great. Switched password. Hopefully not compromised. I'd be much more satisfied if I hadn't had to link my G+ account to use my youtube account, since A) I didn't want a fucking Google Plus account in the fucking first place, and B) my YouTube account is now linked into the wrong Google Plus account because I set it up with a different password back in the day. I'll have to check the other account. How do I tell, just by fishy behavior without the account with posts and such? Wonder if this has anything to with youtube's mobile site behaving strangely and not allowing me deleted videos from history?

My account seems safe but I was hacked years ago so best to keep an eye on it for a while.

Google's been pretty good about informing users, at least as far as I can tell. When a really old password of mine got found out years ago I know Google sent me alerts about connections from other IP addresses. They show the list of IP connections at the bottom of the GMail page too.

Re: 5 million google accounts exposed - Gmail HACKED

How do people know their account is safe? I clicked a link from a news story about this (not sure if it's the one above, I'm lazy) and it looked like a sketchy site in russian. Is there another?

Edit: I did the one in the link above, which is apparently an english translation. Didn't know about the asterisk option when it was in russian. I trusted it enough with asterisks and i came out clean.

https://isleaked.com/en

Initially I suspected this of being a scam that would simply capture your email then possibly start asking more questions (or ask them down the road as part of a phishing scam)

I think Google has now pulled back on forcing Google+ on users, offering an option to disconnect it from YouTube and other tools.

What makes you think that?

I don't have a google+ account so I cannot leave comments on youtube videos.
