Contact lost with Air Algerie plane

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Authorities have lost contact with an Air Algerie flight en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers on board, Algeria's APS state news agency and a Spanish airline company said on Thursday.

APS said authorities lost contact with flight AH 5017 an hour after it took off from Burkina Faso.

Spanish private airline company Swiftair confirmed it had no contact with its MD-83 aircraft operated by Air Algerie, which it said was carrying 110 passengers and six crew. An Algieran official had earlier said it was an Airbus A320.

The company said in a notice posted on its website that the aircraft took off from Burkina Faso at 0117 local time and was supposed to land in Algiers at 0510 local time but never reached its destination

I get the feeling someone somewhere is amassing a personal collection of planes.

Re: Contact lost with Air Algerie plane

To save time:

Burkina Faso |bərˈkēnə ˈfäsō|
a landlocked country in western Africa, in the Sahel; pop. 15,746,200 (est. 2009); capital, Ouagadougou; languages, French (official), indigenous languages. Former name (until 1984) Upper Volta.
Shit, I'd never get on an Air Algiers plane in the first place.

Re: Contact lost with Air Algerie plane

why would they go through the trouble of taking an airplane in flight? There are hundreds of graveyard planes that anyone with a dummy corporation can purchase.

Anyway, I think it is being reported there was severe weather on the route so it could have been a factor.

pretty simple really, don't fly on airplanes in africa that aren't top tier carriers. My personal checklist for trying to avoid dying in a plane crash:
1) fly only on north american & european airlines, with a few selected asian airlines (singapore, cathay, JAL) on boeing or airbus planes.

No russian planes or airlines, no indian airlines, nothing in africa (maybe south african airways). The middle east carriers are probably ok also, because they have plenty of money to spend on maintenance, but still wouldn't be my first choice.

Was flipping through the news channels and heard a rumor that this plane crashed. Is that true?

Good checklist. What are your thoughts on Turkish Airlines? (and does it fall under European airlines or middle east)

Re: Contact lost with Air Algerie plane

It seems the French have some questions about how this plane crashed. It may just be conspiracy theories.
