My First Run-in With the Law Sorta - WWYD?

Until recently, my only encounter with law enforcement was the occasional speeding ticket and a fender bender. Now I find myself in a situation that is annoying to say the least.

It started a month ago when I got a knock on my door and it was a police officer. He asked if a guy named Jace was there. I told him that I didn't know a Jace, and I was the only one living there. The officer looked at me suspiciously and asked how long I had lived there. I told him this guy must be someone who lived here before me, and just didnt update his address. That was the end of it, but it made me uneasy.

Today I get home and there is a note on my door from Officer Roberts. The note was a summons to be at a parole hearing tomorrow for Jace. WTF, why do they still think this guy lives here? I called my apartment office about it, and was basically told it's not their problem. The thing that pisses me off is this was basically a sign on my door all day making anyone who walked by think that I am some kind of criminal. I think I have a legitimate right to be mad especially since I told them a month ago that this guy didn't live here. What would you do in this situation? I don't think getting pissy with a police officer over the phone is a good idea, but I just want them to leave me alone.

Re: My First Run-in With the Law Sorta - WWYD?

Did the note have your name or Jace's on it? For YEARS after I moved into my apartment, I was getting calls from collection agencies about someone who lived here before I did. I just discarded everything I got in the mail, and when they called I kept saying that she didn't live here and I never knew her. I was rather polite until the time they woke me up with their phone call, I finally said "The bitch don't live here!" and they stopped calling after that.

It had Jace on it, but most ppl here don't know my name. Maybe it's a good thing and these redneck neighbors won't mess with me. haha

Not really a 'run in with the law' then if the message wasn't meant for you. It's not like they can do anything if you don't show up to that hearing for this guy.

Re: My First Run-in With the Law Sorta - WWYD?

1) Parole summons for Jace.

2) Somebody might be let out of prison early, going straight to Jace for a little talk.

3) Last known residence for Jace is apparently your address.

Could be a problem. I'd be checking with detectives and determining why Jace is determined to avoid the cops.

If this is the biggest run in you've ever had with the cops, you are the most boring dude ever.

Jace.

Call Officer Roberts and tell him that Jace does not live there and that they can contact the rental office if they don't believe you, you should have shown the original officer your ID and that would have taken care of the problem. Good luck Jace.

You can run, but you can't hide. Set a trap for the cops, and end this thing with extreme malice.

Spoiler:

Back in the forum's heyday, the OP would already have a name change by now.

Re: My First Run-in With the Law Sorta - WWYD?

I'm 50/50 on either calling in and politely explaining that a mistake was made and you don't know any Jace and please stop bothering me, or just throwing the note in a drawer to keep for your records just in case this continues, and just not worry about it because it has nothing to do with you.

Up to you if you want to spend 5 seconds or 5 minutes, but you didn't do anything so why worry.

And you need to change your screen name now.

There's only one thing left to do Jace; Burn down the Courthouse. They've given you no choice.

Re: My First Run-in With the Law Sorta - WWYD?

All you really need to do, Jace, is go down to the court house and present the letter and your ID.
It may be a few hours of your time but in the end at least the Mob wont be after the wrong guy ...
