Amazon Prime Pantry - Amazon's New Grocery Delivery Service

Amazon just introduced their new grocery delivery service Amazon Prime Pantry. You can now buy single items instead of bulk packages. Each shipment costs $5.99 and is limited to 45 pounds or 4 cubic feet. And it's only available to Amazon Prime members.

Here's more info:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/pantry/info/

Looks like an interesting service. I wouldn't use it for stuff I can find at my local supermarket. But if they stock products that aren't available in my area, I might try it out.

What do you think? Would you use this service?

Re: Amazon Prime Pantry - Amazon's New Grocery Delivery Service

i seem to remember someone did a cost comparison a while ago (when it was in beta in one of the locations) and found that amazon's prices to be a bit higher. if you want convenience, then i guess you have to pay slightly more for it.

I certainly would have expected at least one asian family to be featured.

There are only 2 black people who have Amazon Prime and they didn't want their faces shown.

I am imagining an amazon warehouse worker trying to fit a jar of pickles into a yellow bubble mailer.

What do you mean by "jar of pickles" and "bubble mailer," just speak your mind.

I've also seen that video. Too much of Ray J if you ask me.

Re: Amazon Prime Pantry - Amazon's New Grocery Delivery Service

It's $5.99, but delivery takes 1 - 4 day and you have to be a Prime member to use it?

That's some horseshit there. Where's my free 2 day delivery?

Still, if I weren't a penny pincher, having an app that let me just press a button when I needed to "add something to a re-order list" and have it send the order when that list was full would make me happy.

The detergent prices aren't very good either when compared to sams club.

Re: Amazon Prime Pantry - Amazon's New Grocery Delivery Service

I'd consider buying a few odd items here or there that aren't available locally but couldn't see myself using this service that often. Especially considering that I'd have to come up with a few things I'd really want to justify the $5.99 price tag each shipment.

Re: Amazon Prime Pantry - Amazon's New Grocery Delivery Service

In Seattle we had Amazon grocery for a long time (I believe they bought HomeGrocer.com, another Seattle company).

I liked it, the prices were reasonable, and they did a surprisingly good job of picking out good produce, etc..

I only used it a few times though. I think if you got in the habit of it (and established your regular order lists) then it could be really nice, but for some reason I still felt the need to go to the store and there wasn't much point in doing both. I think it was even same-day or next day (since it was delivered in their own truck from a local warehouse, not shipped through the mail). There was either a very low charge or no charge if you spent a certain amount.

Pantry seems like a limited offering of that, with less-perishable offerings, to reach a wider audience.

I think Safeway/Vons/Whateverothermegastoretheyarecalled offers home delivery (generally targeted at the older crowd who have a hard time shopping)

$10 a box Screw that. Although that's a third party seller fulfilled by Amazon.

The saving is not having to deal with the people at Sam's Club to get those items.

Funny that Quisp was mentioned, as I have been staring at the prices of that for the last year or so. It used to be reasonable from what I remember.

Target had a national limited run of it about a year ago, maybe two. I bought about ten boxes.

Huge ripoff unless you're disabled, can't shop in a regular grocery store, and really need the service. It is no coincidence that Amazon just now offers this service, now that they've just raised the price of Prime service by $20. I will never use the service and hope nobody else is scammed into its "convenience" which is what Amazon's counting on of course.

How is this possibly a scam? People see the price ... they can buy it or not buy it.

Because it offers "convenience" instead of convenience. I guess.

Re: Amazon Prime Pantry - Amazon's New Grocery Delivery Service

I get the feeling from various threads that zyzzle just dislikes Amazon. Which is fine, but it may also color his opinion.

Like Thor, I've used the Seattle-based Amazon Fresh once or twice and liked it fine. However, I had some kind of coupon, and using it regularly could add up quickly. A friend said they used it while on vacation to have a stock of basics ready when they got back, which seems like a good idea.
