When Did You Get Your First Tech Items Of Each Type?

First TV, HD TV, CD Player, DVD, Blu-Ray, MP3 Player, Smartphone, Computer, Laptop etc...

And anything else that you can recall. I'm not going to recall my first cassette player as I likely used a general one that was around when I was a kid. Even though CD's came out in the 1980's it feels very 1990's because I did not even have a player until 1996-1997 likely in part that it was never high on the list and they still cost a bit. The time had to come for it to be worth it and I recall it being a gift in my teen years.

DVD's took six years until the players and used films hit a more comfortable level while blu-ray was okay around 2008 because they were not too much to room from a computer.

Already at the point where we may think we paid hundreds of dollars for a device that just played music. (iPods etc...) Mine was a gift back in 2004 and that was quite amazing at the time and I oddly I still have it and it does work.

Edit - Playstation One was around 2000-2001 and no PS2 until a few years later. No current game systems at the moment.

Items like digital cameras and recording were slow. I went from a film camera to a horrible MP floppy disk digital camera until I got my point and shoot and or my smartphone, still not until the 2008 and on time frame. I was happy to be rid of that floppy disk digital camera kind of like how I was thrilled to be done with CRT monitors and TVs along with VHS players. All these things took a bit longer then I would have liked, first LCD monitor was in 2007. (I had a budget to deal with along with life priorities, yet I love tech)

Commodore 64-1986-1987???

First TV bought with my own money: A 13" TV/VCR combo bought before going to college. For the same price I could buy a name-brand 32" LCD today.

First HDTV was a 42" RP Hitachi bought for $2000 (almost a year's worth of rent). Floor model, deeply discounted. Bought this about a year out of college. The store manager put it in his pickup truck and took it to our place.

First CD player bought with my own money would have been a Discman at some point in the 90s.

I have never owned a DVD player. All DVDs were always played either via a PC/laptop, game system, or friend's DVD player.

Don't own a Blu-ray player, but have a PS3/PS4.

First MP3 player, sometime in the mid-00s. iPod shuffle.

Smartphone, iPhone 5S shortly after release. My first laptop was a Macbook Air I bought last year. (I had one through work previously).

I spent roughly $10,000 on a constantly upgraded PC from about 1998–2006. If that counts via the Ship of Theseus rule.

Where the hell were you living that your rent for a year was less than $2000?

Atari 2600-1982
Colecovision-N/A
Record Player & Cassette Player-My cousin gave me his tape recorder when he got a boombox, 1983 or so

Cell Phone-2000
Laserdisc player N/A
8MM Video Camera-N/A
Playstation-maybe 6 months in. Same for the ps2.
DVD Player-the week sixth sense came out on DVD, I had one in my pc with about a 4 DVD collection prior, when I bought my Sony player for $300, it was on, collection multiplied like gremlins, was never a VHS collector.
Apple IMac & Apple Laptop-never that
Laptop-first one was around 2007-08, never really liked em, but jumped in when they hit $400, back to using my pc.
ps3, about a year into it's release. Picked up my first HDTV at the same time, early 2008 I think.

Pretty much. Got into it briefly in the 80's then my collection got thrown in the garbage for it being "satanic." I may have told the story in the vinyl thread.

And with the mention of vinyl I'm reminded of all the records from a family member I must deal with. Boxes and boxes! -_-

Re: When Did You Get Your First Tech Items Of Each Type?

A better thread would be the last time you used an obsolete piece of technology. The last VHS tape I recall playing was around 2000-2001. I was already heavily invested in DVD at the time but had kept a few things around from the VHS era. I did keep my VHS collection around for a couple of years before I realized I was never going to watch them ever again.

The last Beta tape? Probably around 1988 or 1989.

Sega Genesis: 1989
TV: 1990; still using.
VCR: 1990; first of many.
LD: 1992
CD player: don't remember; not a big music fan.
First front projector: 1993
Various 32 and 64-bit video game consoles: 1995-'97; all long gone.
Laptop: 1997; long, long gone.
DVD player: 1997-'98
LD/DVD combo player: 2000; still have.
Alphasmart Dana word processor: 2005; still use

Then what's the point of having a Blu-ray player? Is it a PS3 used for gaming mostly?
