Stuff White People Like #116 http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008...en-to-anymore/

In any given current moment nothing scares white people more than "whatever black musicians are currently doing." But once the music is suitably old, or preferably the performer is dead, white people trip all over themselves in admiration.

And notice they always pick Biggie and 2Pac. Pretty fucking easy to like the guys who died young. There were MANY more rappers that were superior to those guys. But no one wants to heap praise on Ice-T, Ice Cube, or Dr. Dre because they lived long enough for us to see them sell out with reality shows, family comedies, and corporate music. It's pretty fucking easy to say "Biggie and 2Pac were the black Beatles" when they're dead, just like it's easy to deify Curt Cobain because he didn't live long enough for us to see him be a judge on The Voice.

Is it racist to say that I didn't like Tupac and Biggie when they were alive and don't like them now that they're dead?

But that Will Smith, he's alright.

That's good and all but I don't see how that satirical article proves that the Slate's article is white guilt, and I doubt it was originally posted because the writer picked Biggie instead of NWA. Personally I prefer the Wu-Tang Clan to any of the others mentioned here, I think their influence was farther reaching and still felt today.

I enjoy hip hop from the past 4 decades, The Roots and Big Boi putting out some of my favorite albums of the past few years. Are they "safe" artists for white people? What about smooth, jazzy Digable Planets from the 90s? What if I like hip hop from white folks like Aesop Rock, or Japanese artists such as Shing02? Hispanic: B-Real? Religious rap: Killah Priest? Why is it that white people can't just enjoy hip hop from all eras without people thinking they're trying to impress black people? I'm not sure if that was the original poster's intent with his post, but I see a lot of posts from people here that completely dismiss hip hop as if it's beneath their refined palate then they turn around and dust off their Styx album.

The article is stupid... it doesn't matter if Biggie influenced a ton of hip hop artists. Because hip-hop is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Same reason why it doesn't matter that Venom influenced a ton of black metal bands. It's an irrelevant genre, so who cares?
