Saving a street parking spot that you shoveled out. Yay or Nay?

You park your car on a city street. It snows. You shovel your car out. Should you be able to put a cone or a lawn chair to "save" that spot?

Seems like that is the custom in South Boston and typically results in fights or punctured tires.

In my neighborhood, you're not allowed to park in the street when it snows until it has been plowed, or you can get a ticket or even be towed. And once it has been plowed, I don't really see the point in saving a particular spot. So no.

Public street parking is a free for all. There are very few exceptions in my book. Don't put a cone in "your" spot.

Found this part interesting:

City policies allow for space savers—a South Boston winter tradition—to be used to claim a shoveled parking spot for 48 hours after a snow emergency.
So, in some cases, this is actually legal. I also found it interesting that you can pay people to shovel out a spot for you.

Never lived in Boston, but I haven't seen this tradition anywhere else.

Re: Saving a street parking spot that you shoveled out. Yay or Nay?

This has always been a big thing in Chicago too. I grew up on the southwest side which wasn't nearly as crowded as part of the north side. So we did tend to save the couple spots outside our house since we didn't have access to a garage. Each house basically had two spots though so it wasn't too much of a problem.

Up on the north side though, where you might have 6-8 apartments on a lot that spans a couple of curb spaces, it's insane to think you can keep that spot. If you park on the street, you're not really shoveling out a spot to keep. Your digging out your car so you can use your car.

Unlike Boston, there is nothing official on the books here about. Daley used to come on TV and tell people to use common sense, as in, don't park somewhere you just saw someone shovel because you'll probably regret it.

I get that it's legal, but it's a weird law in my opinion. I used to shovel my street spot out in NY and lose it all the time. I didn't think twice about it. There were always cars cruising, looking for well shoveled spots though. I wanted to slap those people.

Wouldn't a better policy be that everybody has 48 (or 24) hours to shovel out their car (such polices are already in effect for sidewalks)? The problem with Boston is that it's a very walkable city with decent public transportation. Getting around without a car is pretty easy in Boston. When it snows, there are people that use their cars as space savers (that is, they just won't use their car until the snow melts).

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/12/1...weekend-storm/

A South Boston resident says his car was vandalized on Sunday after he moved a saw horse that was in a parking space in front of his home on West 4th Street. The man told police that he did not know the saw horse was placed there to hold the spot.

A witness says he observed a man who appeared to be about 40 years old, shoot nails into the victim’s tires. The suspect, described as a white male with facial hair, was driving a blue pickup truck, possibly a Ford F150, with a company name printed on the doors. The witness says the truck had been parked in the spot for the last couple of days.

Somehow I read this as "into the victim's eyes".

if you place an item on a public street and drive away, is it still yours?

I think the Supreme Court answered this once and for all in the landmark Finders v Weepers case.

Are these spots marked, or can I pull my nose up to the sawhorse, and have someone else back their bumper up to the sawhorse? We didn't move the marker, but obviously no one can park in the space.

Something tells me this idea was first introduced by a woman. If I spent the time and effort clean up my man, I should get to keep it for 48 hours. No other biatch gets to park on my man.

We have a whole lot of snow here and this seems insane to me, saving a spot with a cone. It's not your spot. I don't care what you did to get your car out.

That happens here too. One of the cities forbids it and they drive around throwing out chairs and cones. I used to dig out my car but would never claim the spot. I just hoped it was still there. If not, no big deal.

Get rid of free on-street parking. Problem solved.

I would find the eyes story much more interesting:

It is frustrating to shovel out your car, and lose the spot as soon as you pull away.
However, that's what happens when you park on a public street. You cannot save the spot with cones or whatever just because it's in front of your house. These conflicts rage on every year on Staten Island too, especially in the newer neighborhoods where the houses are so close together, street parking is minimal.

In Boston - especially South Boston - double (and triple) parking is a "tradition". I've lived there, it's pretty funny.

In Chicago, the chair in the shoveled out space is sacred. Disrespect it at your peril. I once represented a client who shoveled out a space, then got in a shoving match with his pregnant neighbor when she tried to take it. I think we could have gotten him off had it gone to a jury.
