anyone own a dodge charger? how do you like it?

I am looking at buying a 2012 dodge charger sxt v6 and was wondering how you like it? How is it in the winter? I know its rear wheel drive and living in chicago we do get some snow. Usually not to bad, and cleaned up by the next day. But having never driven a rwd car I am a little concerned..

Thoughts

Re: anyone own a dodge charger? how do you like it?

I drove one (a V6) a couple of years ago as a rental from Seattle to Kalispell, MT and back, taking windy two-lane highways (including mountain roads) one way and Interstate on the way back. I thought it was a very comfortable road trip car.

My department also used them for some of our law enforcement vehicles for several years and the guys that had them seemed to like them. I have an issued Impala so I cannot comment on them as a "daily driver".

As for snow/ice performance, I'm really not sure.

I have a rear wheel drive BMW in Chicago. I'd recommend snow tires for the Winter months if you go with a RWD car. Makes a huge difference.

Some RWD cars are worse than others. Besides 2WD/RWD pick-ups, it seems like the Camaro/Trans-Am types are about the worst. Police departments all over the U.S. have been using RWD Ford LTD Crown Vics for years, including in thousands of places where they see a lot of bad winter weather. They must not be too bad. I doubt the Charger is any worse than the Crown Vic.

If it is really bad that day, just throw a couple of 50lb bags of dog food or something in the trunk. Or, in your case as a Chicagoan, 100lbs of water softener salt pellets or blocks.

US government entities (Fed, State, City) are mostly confined to buying the standard "USA" vehicles. Has nothing to do with performance.

But there have almost always been choices even within the confines of domestic vehicles that come with LE packages. For example, the Maryland State Police has for years been clinging ferociously to their fleet of Crown Vics, even though the model has been discontinued since the 2011 model year. Is there and has there been a domestic FWD option from both Ford and Chevy? Yup, the Taurus and Impala respectively. MSP has not been stubbornly holding onto them for monetary reasons. They like them because they like them. Size and performance.

Also, FWIW, the Federal rules about buying cars only from domestic manufacturers have been steadily relaxing in the past few years. GSA has a whole bunch of Hyundais, for example. I suspect that they still only buy stuff that was actually made here, however.

My coworker has one, and he loves it. He's driven it through Colorado winters, although last winter was incredibly mild. Besides, I thought they were all wheel drive.

Nope, standard Charger is RWD. At least they were until a year or two ago.

Re: anyone own a dodge charger? how do you like it?

I drove a Charger as a rental back in April from San Diego to Palm Springs (via Pines to Palms Highway...curvy mountainous road) and was extremely impressed. The handling was great, and the stereo was amazing as well.

I had written off most "base" domestic sedans as crap, up until I drove this thing. Loved it.

Re: anyone own a dodge charger? how do you like it?

I had a 2007 Charger RT. Loved it.

I later ended up buying a Chrysler 300C, which is pretty much the same car. It's also great.

If things continue well, my next car will be one of the above. I've been very impressed with them.

What do you drive for your 'company car'?

Strangely enough, I'm on a detail now where they have me in a pure rental car (no blue lights, no radio). It's a Ford Explorer. V6 and extremely underpowered.

Picked this up over the weekend. Gonna head down to Laguna Seca next month and do the SRT experience again.

I've been driving one for the last week, as my car is in the repair shop.

Seriously tempted to buy one now. It even comfortably fits the baby's car seat.

I have kids, too and it's one of the reasons I bought it. I wanted to buy another muscle car but they don't fit my needs. I have to please the wife and still get what I want. This was the best compromise for me.

I have an '08 Daytona Edition. It handles well in the snow for a 355hp RWD.
