Ever been suspended from school?

I got suspended twice, once for fighting in the 8th grade I went to a Catholic school with a zero tolerance policy for fighting. I got into a fight with a kid for thinking it was funny to throwing a softball at me during gym.

Second time was senior year, I had essentially completed all my credits for graduation and I scheduled my first period of the semesters to be study hall. However our school had a three times tardy get a detention skip detention immediate suspension, it didn't really matter whether you were one minute late or ten minutes late so if I knew I wasn't going to make it rather than rush and still be late for study hall, I would go to Denny's, McDonalds and get breakfast then show up five minutes before study hall was over. Suspended twice, still graduated, still got accepted into colleges.

I always wondered what the point of stay at home suspensions was all I did was sleep, watch porn, play some PS2. I remember being excited for a suspension day once because I got so see Spider-Man at like 1pm on a thursday when it came out and the theater wasn't crowded.

Never.

I managed to keep my shenanigans to a minimum at school and well hidden at home.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

No.

The nuns at my grammar school didn't believe in suspensions. They thought a good ass-whoopin' administered by them was the proper punishment for any infraction.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

I should've been suspended or expelled, but the principal refused to. My parents put me in private Christian school from Pre-K on and during my sophomore year, I really wanted to transfer to the public school where most of my friends went. I tried quite a few things to get kicked out, but my parents told the school what I was doing, so they refused to punish me. The principal just sat me down and said that whatever I did, either my parents or the police would be called and my punishment would be from them.

Never suspended, but did get into trouble for stuff that would've had me expelled immediately today.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

I got in-school suspensions twice. Both were for a single day.

First one was because I got into a fight with one of my friends in the halls between classes.

The second one was... complicated.

9th grade - 3 day suspension for smoking on school property

10th and 11th grade - didn't get suspended but got permanent detention. Had to spend all free periods, plus stay till end of last period in room 207 entire school year.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

Once, in eighth grade for not doing homework. My dad sat me in a chair in his office. I read The Two Towers.

A couple weeks before that day, I had been confronted by the guidance counselor and the principal and they asked me why I wasn't doing the work. I couldn't tell them. Now I have the vocabulary to know that I was too depressed to put in the effort. They got me to agree to a work plan, and they suspended me when I didn't meet the minimum I'd agreed to.

I know that I was thinking about death a lot by then, but I don't think I was actually suicidal until I was 14 or 15.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

Never been suspended.

I think the closest I got to being in trouble was when I was among several guys who were told to stay after school for being disruptive in a class. After school, the teacher had us carrying a bunch of stuff out to her car. Seems like that was the whole point behind the detention.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

I was once suspended from my 8th grade english class for a month. I can't exactly remember what I did to deserve it, but I basically had to sit in the office and read a book, then write a report. I read "Inside the Third Reich" by Speer.

I did have to spend a day at home in 10th grade, I think, after getting caught throwing snowballs at the UPS truck at school.

Yes. Once for making a gun shape out of my toaster strudel and another time for squirting a super soaker in my backyard which made my neighbor uncomfortable.

I got in-school suspension a few times, and once out of school...but I don't remember why on the latter.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

Nope. Got in trouble for a couple dumb things in elementary school and both times I was indignant about the scoldings. One was an accident where I ran into someone at the end of gym in second grade.

The other was fifth grade, when two kids who would pick on me and a friend for being dorks (a fair assessment) all during art class decided to up the antagonism by lying to their teacher, saying we made fun of them for being Hispanic. We were both held after school and made to sit with our teacher, the two kids and their teacher. The little shits were crying. I had to sit there and listen to their bullshit story and how much I had clearly hurt their feelings. Then was told to apologize. I refused and called them liars in front of everyone. Nothing else came of it.

Oh, one more. Senior year of high school I had a math teacher infamous for throwing people out of class. I said something to a friend during one of his lectures and he blew up at me. Made me sit in the hall for a few minutes, then came back out and ordered me to go to the dean. So I went, introduced myself (had never met the dean before), calmly told him the issue. The dean rolled his eyes when he heard who sent me. Sat in his office for maybe 5 minutes then went back to class.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

Multiple times. All for skipping school. My senior year I was absent close to 40 times and what would they do the day after I skipped? Put me in ISS (in school suspension) all day where I could read or sleep or do the work I didnt do before. If they wanted to punish me they should have just made me go to class normally.

Re: Ever been suspended from school?

When I think of all the stuff we got away with in New York public schools in the 1960s and '70s without even the threat of punishment. High school (the "Fame" school) was one big party. I remember coming in late one Monday morning and you had to write your name down with a reason why you were late and my friend Scott's name was ahead of mine with the excuse, "The morning after," followed by a girl we knew who wrote, "the same." (My excuse was more mundane.) I remember one friend coming back from lunch one day and saying, "I just had the greatest hash, man." And I'm quite sure that he and his girlfriends smoked it on school property (which was half-a-block from Times Square).

Life before and after school was pretty violent in elementary and junior high school. I can't think of anyone who ever got suspended in my classes. I had one classmate who was a regular troublemaker but I don't remember him ever being suspended, although he must have been. Sometimes he was simply demoted and put into a dumber class. (And, yes, there were classes for smart kids and dumb kids. They may not have officially been called that, but we all knew it.) Today they would have given this guy ritalin or something. One morning, he and I had a fight outside just before school was to start (truth to tell he had a legitimate grievance against me) and then we had to sit next to each other in class. I showed him a picture from the newspaper of one of our girl classmates giving Soupy Sales a kiss after his show at the Paramount--making him the first one to see it--and he extended his hand and said, "Friends?" and I shook it, "Friends." Decades later I tell this story to a co-worker who was a friend of Soupy's in his final days and he says, "See? Soupy brings people together."

There was a shooting in the hero shop across the street from my junior high school during lunch hour, literally just yards away from the school entrance. Do you think they stopped class? Do you think the school administration said a word about it? Letters to parents? Calls to parents? I didn't even see any press coverage of it. And it had a racial element, too. A friend of mine, whom I'm in touch with to this day, some 45 years later, was in the hero shop when it happened and saw it. Did anyone question him? No. The only repercussion I recall was that sometime afterwards the school instituted "Captive Lunch Hour," which meant we could no longer go out for lunch, but had to eat inside, which meant I had to bring lunch from home every day (usually a bologna sandwich, a hard-boiled egg and a stalk of celery--no wonder I was a skinny little kid throughout my childhood). And, yes, they DID call it Captive Lunch Hour. Just contrast what would happen today if there's a shooting even remotely close to a school.
