Is my girlfriend crazy? (Believes she doesn't need a license to drive)

Just putting this out here- I've had generally bad luck with the opposite sex all my life, but last year I met someone who I got along with great for a while. We spent about 6 out of 7 days of the week together last summer with nary an argument. However, here's what's been going on:

She has a strong belief that people do not legally need a driver's license to drive a car on any public streets or highways unless they are doing so for commercial purposes. She believes simply driving from point A to point B is one's "right to travel". I never really bought this but figured she was free to believe this if she wanted to. She also believes that registering your car with the state's Department of Motor Vehicles is voluntarily giving the government the rights to your car, so she removed her license plates from her car and put signs in the windows saying "Private Conveyance- not for hire" and carried a book full of evidence from the internet she had printed out to support her case.

Well, in October she was first stopped by police and forced to park her car and not drive any further. She called me and I was able to pick her up and take her home, and someone she knew had a towing business so they were able to tow the car back to where she was living. A few weeks later she was stopped while driving again, and this time she was forced away from the car and it was towed by a company in contract with the police department and impounded. She didn't have the money to get the car out, so it's been impounded ever since and may have been sold by now. I thought this might have at least taught her something, but she STILL believes she is in the right and that her car was "stolen" from her. She tried to bring the matter to court, but the judge found an error in her paperwork and would not proceed with the case any further. She says she's still trying to appeal. Meanwhile I've been driving her everywhere she needs to go (she does pay me for gas and/or buys me lunch, so it's not like she's freeloading) but since I'm going to school and have stuff to do I've told her I'm not always going to be able to drive her everywhere at every time.

Does anyone else know people with this belief? Funny thing is she knows someone else out of town like this, and his vehicle was also impounded for the same reason.

Why do you have to go straight to "crazy"?

"Stupid" is also a valid option.

Point at your car and explain she needs a license to ride. Then pull down your pants, point at your penis, and explain that she DOES NOT need a license to ride. Then have sex with her and she will understand.

Yeah, her family probably lives on a mountain somewhere with more guns than the 101st Airborne and you're already under surveillance by the FBI.

Ask her if she owns any ricin.

Re: Is my girlfriend crazy? (Believes she doesn't need a license to drive)

As others have said, she is pretty detached from reality on this. There is absolutely no such thing as a "right to travel (by car)." I assure you the drafters of the Constitution at no point intended for there to be a right to travel by motor coach free from government regulation.

Her beliefs, if believed by enough people, would make the roads an unbelievably more dangerous place.

Unless she's one of those "crazies" where the other stuff is as good as she is insane, you should probably update your OK Cupid profile and check out the online dating thread.

Re: Is my girlfriend crazy? (Believes she doesn't need a license to drive)

There's a name for people like that. The technical term is "fucking idiot". Sorry man, anyone that stupid isn't worth your time. Oh, wait a minute. She read it on the internet so it must be true. I read on the internet you don't really need to wipe your ass. Eventually the shit will dry up and fall off. Says right there on Wikipedia

They are called motor vehicle laws. The government is allowed to pass laws. You have the right to travel, no one said anything about being guaranteed the right to a car.

As a matter of public safety the government has every right to require registration, insurance and inspections. Call it a cash grab if you want but they have the right. You are not giving the gov't the rights to your car. You are protected by the unlawful search and seizure law. However once you've broken the rules like she has, you give up those rights and they can search the car.

In the interest of public safety, the gov't has every right to make sure anyone operating a motor vehicle has passed minimal testing requirements. They can't require people to get a license, just require one if you want to drive.

You don't need to break up with her. Just get as many BJ's as you can as often as you can. Soon she'll be in jail and when you don't bail her out, that's better than a text break-up.

She is wrong. Any proof she thinks she uncovered, is wrong. This can keep her from getting a job in the future.

If you really want to put this to bed, you can join a legal aid forum and post the question to the lawyers there (I suspect something crazy like this may be tackled for fun), or simply hire a lawyer to look into it.

Re: Is my girlfriend crazy? (Believes she doesn't need a license to drive)

She's just a moran.

She does realize while she has the "right" to do whatever she wants, if she's using something that was paid for by the state or country (ie: roads, sidewalks, etc) it has it's own set of rules.

She can drive on your 40 acre lot as much as she wants, drunk too, if she wants.

That said she sounds like she smells bad

Re: Is my girlfriend crazy? (Believes she doesn't need a license to drive)

I used to work for a stockbroker who became a tax protester. I quit when he wanted me to go to work as an independent contractor (I was his secretary, so this would have been pretty illegal). He also believed the government had no right to impede people's freedom to travel by requiring driver's licenses and vehicle registrations.

You can't reason with people like that, so my advice is, don't even try. Just get away. I did.

Just tell him to burn his money. Do not, I repeat DO NOT, spend any money on "disproving" something so idiotic, so asinine, so goddamn moronic that she should be locked away for believing it. She's a fool, I tell you. A fool.

But does she give good head?
