I live in OKC and watched this all unfold as it happened, and I can say it was one of the scariest F'n things I've ever seen in my life. I have a co-worker who lives in Moore and thankfully she got out before it hit, but we don't know if she still has a house.

This was MUCH worse than the 1999 tornado. I have a feeling this will go down as the most destructive tornado in our state's history if not the country.

Called Red Cross a bit ago to see if I can go volunteer out there. Haven't heard back yet.

Far from uncommon, unfortunately. I grew up in Moore and, while I don't actively live there, my entire family and many lifelong friends still do. This is the 3rd major event since 1999.

If you don't know anything about tornadoes, let me tell you there's nothing more scary or that can make you feel more helpless. These things spawn quickly and strike faster. In mere seconds entire neighborhoods are gone.

As such, Oklahoma has some of the most advanced weather prediction technology and the local airwaves are nonstop coverage (to a fault, sometimes). Luckily we're to the point where we know a day or two early that there'll be "significant events" but you can't accurately predict when or where like with a hurricane, for example. It's so concentrated and so severe.

Also equally crazy is how a tornado can move through a neighborhood and leave certain structures unscathed. Look at any overhead shot at the "path" and you'll see what could be an overgrown lawn with one stripe mowed through the middle of it.

New reports saying 37 dead. Not sure if that includes a few dozen children & faculty at the elementary school where efforts are no longer categorized as search and rescue, but recovery. Fuck.

Sad shit. It amazes me that people still want to live in places where this kind of stuff happens regularly.

51 now dead :(

States like OK, you almost need sensors every square mile to go off when something like this happens. Freaky. And tragic.

There aren't many places where "something" doesn't happen regularly. Hurricane's, Tornado's, Floods, Fires, Earthquakes, Nor'easters, freezing weather, heat waves, etc..

And you ask the same thing everyone asks whenever an event like this happens

You live in Arizona, where little does happen, but you can have issues as well. I lived there five years, and when those monsoon's came, the flash flooding was no fun.

I'm on vacation now, bet I go to Oklahoma next weekend.

Hoping the casualties don't continue to rise but it left a massive path of destruction with a lot of searching yet to be done... so terribly sad. :(

Has Pat Robertson blamed this on Oklahoma's growing acceptance of gays yet?

I was wondering why a school wouldn't have a basement for things like this, but then I just heard the anchor on CNN say that nobody builds them there because the ground is rocky and it's too expensive. Just tragic, and there's not much yiu can do aside from hope you're not in the way!

Crazy and sad.

It's almost 2 years to the day of the Joplin tornado.

Bacon 05-20-13 08:55 PM

If there's anything good about this is that it didn't happen late at night
I'd hate to imagine how many people would have died if they were asleep
