Snow Day

Well we've just had lots and lots of snow here this weekend and I was hoping for a day off work today but no such luck, although I did get a later start. Anybody else get lucky?

There must have been a helluva snowstorm in Arizona then.

Re: Snow Day

I'd take snow day, MLK Day, bomb threat day, but no such luck for me here.

Off to work I go....

Re: Snow Day

Same here. No snow day, no MLK day (my boss: "we don't have any black people working here, why do we need to take off?").

Re: Snow Day

MLK day is for schools and stuff. Businesses are still open. Even the really big ones don't take off.

You could always do the bomb threat. Or you could just blow the place up. Problem solved!

Re: Snow Day

Since when are "snow days" part of the workplace? "Snow days" are for students, not employees.

And yes, if it's really bad on the roads, I will call in and take a vacation day if I have nothing critical on my desk. But to expect a "snow day" like I'm some third grader hoping for a chance to pull the old Flexible Flyer out of the garage and head for the nearest big hill? Uh, no.

Only when there is enough for the news to tell people to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.

That hasn't happened here in years, but if you work at a small company they're more lenient about that kind of thing. I don't think anyone "expects" snow days like you implied.

I'm off for MLK day, and I don't work at a school, a bank, or for the government

Every few winters here is a bad 'un. A couple of years ago I actually missed three days (two in a row plus one a few weeks later) just because of the bad weather. I have a fifty-mile-a-day commute, though. They cut those of us who drive a distance some slack. My supervisor only lives about two miles from our building, so she is almost never out no matter how bad the weather gets.

SSG Honeylamb works for the state highway department, so on "snow days" she is out driving the plow. I was mostly sputtering over the OP's post because of that fact.

Re: Snow Day

I work for a university, and in 6 years, I have gotten 10 snow days (This is not a lot considering we get a significant amount of snow, the University just does not care).

Re: Snow Day

I'm pretty sure I haven't had a snow day (or MLK day) off since college.

Re: Snow Day

I get mlk day off since I'm a school employee. I had last Monday off as well due to unseasonably warm weather. It was in the 40s and rained, causing a layer of ice on the frozen ground.

Re: Snow Day

I get MJK day off, which is surprising because I'm not sure anybody in Utah knows who he is.

Why would anyone NOT want to move to DC and get a government job?

Re: Snow Day

I'm in the UK so don't even know what MLK Day is! Is it to do with Martin Luther King?

I certainly wasn't expecting a snow day I said that I had been hoping for a snow day. I'm a teacher at a school in the UK and sometimes when we have a lot of snow our headteacher closes the school for Health & Safety reasons.

So no, not expecting but certainly I would think understandable for hoping!

So since you are a teacher, I retreat, hat in hand.

Re: Snow Day

I never get MLK, and if the weather is bad enough for me to take a snow day, it means I work remotely from home.

If they call it MJK day, then they probably don't know who he is.

My company gives us today off.
