Tinnitus???

Anyone ever suffer from this(ringing in ears)? Its been bothering me lately,non-stop. Finding the cause might be a major issue.
I have an essential tremor. This is known for causing Tinnitus.
I was just put on a heart medication-Ranexa-which might cause Tinnitus.
I have a family history of it.
When I worked -it was in a loud environment.
I stopped per doctors orders taking the medication.
Can't see or talk to my Neurologist till next week.
I will try too see my PCP tomorrow.
If its a hereditory problem-nerve damage-there might not be anything that can be done.

I think there's some kind of surgery that can be done but you won't be able to hear anything at that frequency ever again.

How long does it take for the medication to flush from your system?

Re: Tinnitus???

I have it, thanks to all the concerts, festivals, clubs and party's I've visited over the years. I still frequent those things alot but I wear earplugs so it's never gotten any worse. Take care of your ears.

I'm on Ranexa twice a day. I was scheduled in 90 minutes for the next dosage. Not exactly crazy about this medication. 750 dollars for 3 months @ Walmart. Much cheaper in Canada. I was getting free samples. Fixed Income and free samples go hand in hand.

I am guessing that it should be running out shortly. They did tell me too quit the medication because I mentioned I didn't notice a change. Suppose to reduce chest pain.

Yep-too much AC/DC for me. I need to tone it down to Metallica.

Re: Tinnitus???

You are in good company. William Shatner has it. Seems like he did some kind of therapy where he had a device that played a similar sound to what he heard. He had to listen to that for something like a month straight. After that, he didn't really notice the ringing anymore.

This. I've had it for we'll over twenty years. A constant ringing in my left ear. I actually have gotten used to it. Luckily, it has never really bothered me.

Same here, doesn't bother me but I hear it clearly when it's silent around me. I just take care of my ears now to prevent more damage.

Similar situation for me. Had it for a little over 2 years. I am able to tune it out now. The only time I have trouble with it is when I am trying to fall asleep.

Re: Tinnitus???

I have it. Too much loud heavy metal music in my youth. I also think I was born with it, because I had trouble with those hearing tests they gave us in grade school, and the loud music aggravated it.

Re: Tinnitus???

I've had it for about 20 years, since I got out of the Army. I have to run a fan or air filter at night so I can sleep, otherwise that constant eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee drives me nuts.

So does Leonard Nimoy. Supposedly, he and Shatner both developed it after being too close to an on set FX explosion while shooting the episode "The Apple".

I'm sure I developed mine from a similar incident... while attending (of all things) a Neal Diamond concert in Phoenix. My wife and I were in seats to the farthest left side and about ten rows from the back of the stage. No one was seated in the rows ahead of us or to our left, only in back and to our right. During the highpoint and chorus of the song "Coming to America" they set off these "cannons" (for want of a better word) at the back of the stage ten rows ahead of us... twice. I literally couldn't hear anything for several moments afterwards and my ears were ringing the entire rest of the night.

I wonder if it's too late to sue Neal?

BTW, thanks for the info about the sound therapy. Although my tinnitus has not been a serious issue for me (so far, thankfully... I recall reading somewhere that Shatner said his was so bad he contemplated suicide), it is noticeable at times. I might check into that soon.

Yeah, that would be objective tinnitus--where there actually is something in the body making that sound, and a doctor listening carefully would be able to hear it as well. I had to take a year of audiology as an undergrad, and that just blew me away. Imagine going to the doctor and saying "there's this ringing in my ear," and the doctor listening and saying, "yup, I hear it, too."

Re: Tinnitus???

Almost everybody has it to some degree. I've had it for about 15 years. I don't notiice it unless there's complete silence. The sound of the refridgerator running is enough to it disappear. It was explained to me that as your hearing decreases, the tinnitus increases. All the loud concerts, gunfire, lawnmowers, car races, etc. that damage hearing makes the tinnitus more noticeable. The loud noises don't cause the ringing as much as the hearing loss from the noise making the ringing stand out more. Being deaf with tinnitus would be a nightmare.
