Re: Skydiver will attempt to break the sound barrier

Sounds like fun! I'm intrigued by the idea of getting corporate sponsorship from a soft drink for a scientific mission.

We could do more things. Cancer research sponsored by Ford, Archeological digs sponsored by Proctor and Gamble.

It's far more Evel Knievel than it is Marie Curie.

Yeah...

That lucky son of a bitch. Typical skydives only go 12,500 - 14,500 ft.

I don't think being a BASE jumper really qualifies him, though.

I'd imagine that the hardest part is staying awake. Didn't the other record holder temporarily pass out? He was also back in the 70's, and the new guy probably has better life support equipment.

I believe (at least in the 90s) that tobacco companies were some of the biggest donors to cancer research.

Re: Skydiver will attempt to break the sound barrier

Looks like moved to tomorrow due to weather.

And there will be a "live" stream. There will be a 20 second delay in case of an accident.

Joseph Kittinger's 1960 jump

How much of a badass do you have to be to voluntarily step out of a balloon into nothing but space?

Is that a car battery strapped to his ass? Probably needed it to warm his suit or run some primitive instruments or something.

Maybe it's a toilet. I know I'd need one.

It's the carrying case for his giant brass balls.

That's the guy that I was thinking of. I saw an interview where he talked about being barely awake (or possibly unconscious) until he reached the breathable atmosphere.

Re: Skydiver will attempt to break the sound barrier

Cool they are doing it near Roswell NM. Though I'm sure there are good reasons for it.

And they have to have winds less than 2mph...wow.

But whether Baumgartner, a 43-year-old Austrian military parachutist and extreme athlete, can attempt the jump depends on New Mexico's often unpredictable weather. Winds from a cold front already delayed the jump by a day. Even the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, 200 miles to the north, was forced to delay by a day its mass ascension of more than 500 balloons over the weekend. Baumgartner's jump can only be made if winds on the ground are less than 2 mph.

And I guess I missed it before. But, not only a 20 sec delay on the live stream, but also not showing the cameras he has on his body. It all goes well I'm assuming we will be seeing some pretty cool Red Bull commercials.

Red Bull has been promoting a live Internet stream of the event at http://www.redbullstratos.com/live , from all cameras except those on Baumgartner's body. But organizers said there will be a 20-second delay in their broadcast of footage in case of a tragic accident.
