Are you at the place you thought you'd be at your current age?

I thought I'd be a lot further career wise than I am. I just turned 26 and I thought I'd own my own place and not be renting still so I guess not. But at least I'm not like some of my friends having kids, no free time, and being a miracle if they ever come out. But I'm still on the married by 32 plan and the girlfriend agrees with it. No real rush to spend a bunch of money for some ceremony.

Nope. I thought I would be dead. Or, possibly, a bag lady.

Nope. Life isn't as bad as I thought it would be, but not as great as I hoped either.

To those of you that aren't where you thought you'd be, are you doing anything to change your current station in life?

I didn't say I was unhappy about it.

Not yet. But I have no reason to believe that I won't get there.

Getting there. Still don't have a yacht yet, but maybe it's on the path.

If you spend too much time dwelling on what should've been, you can't enjoy or appreciate what you have now.

Re: Are you at the place you thought you'd be at your current age?

No, not at all. And it's the source of much pain and self hatred.

But i did have a guy who is doing very well tell me that his life didnt start clicking and going successfully until he was in his 50's. That gives me hope. Also, although I'm starting late in life, 42yo, i have a plan that might pan out well in a few years. Its better than no plan....

Re: Are you at the place you thought you'd be at your current age?

I just want to have enough money to buy my own condo or small home and not have to worry about these stupid student loans crushing me. My Dad owned his own house when he was my age and resold it for about 150K in the early 90s after having it as a rental property I just kind of want to do that.

A little yes, a little no. I'm renting, but I'd rather be renting in NYC than be owning a home in the suburbs. I do have my own place. I do wish I was making more money though but who doesnt?

Relationship wise I'm not even close to where I want to be. I'm 27 and the longest relationship I've had has been 6 months.

You're still planning on marrying that girlfriend? Is part of your life plan also being divorced by 34?

Re: Are you at the place you thought you'd be at your current age?

I'm not one of those people who are goal-oriented. I just sort of let life happen to me and try to enjoy the ride. I think I am a more positive person than when I was younger, and I'm definitely more grateful for the things I have and less bitter about the things I don't.

The only thing I remember wanting to do "when I grew up" was be a wife and a mother. That was more a socially-pressured aspiration than anything else. As I grew up and learned that I really don't like children, I'm glad I had the foresight not to do what some people do and have them anyway because "you're supposed to." And obviously I'm not going to be anybody's wife anytime soon.

P.S. To the OP, let up on yourself. I didn't buy my first (and so far only) house until I was 41!

Re: Are you at the place you thought you'd be at your current age?

Well, I'm 57, I'm alive, and I'm happily married, so I'm pleased with how that's turned out. But I was really hoping to be more financially secure than I am at this point in my life. If the economy hadn't tanked and stayed that way, my computer repair business would have been going gangbusters by now (as evidenced by the steady increase over the first 4 years). Now, because the economy is still in the shitter and everybody is out of work, they're starting up their own little computer repair businesses out of their homes as a means of keeping themselves in money, and my business is suffering for it. Hell, my wife and I were driving one day and saw two new computer repair businesses in the same friggin' block 'fer cryin' out loud! Not to mention the hand-drawn signs in peoples front yards and the BS on Craig's List. So I'm definitely angry about the shitty economy. I wish it would mend so everybody could get back to work and put their little side shows to rest so my business would get back up to snuff and I could quit this PITA part-time job I had to take to help pay the bills.

So, I'm happy about how my life has turned out in one regard, angry about the other. -kd5-

Re: Are you at the place you thought you'd be at your current age?

Oh yeah, I bought my first place at 28 (had a house built, my mortgage is $50 more than my rent was), but I'm still single as hell, and I hate my job, and career path, and have a ton of debt. House isn't everything.

I'm 29 now, so I still have some time for improvement. I'm working on that.
