What Root Beer is best for making a float?

There must be an ideal Root Beer for the perfect float. Which is it?

I always liked A&W or Barq's.

There's A&W Root Beer and then there's everything else.

You left Barq's off the list, therefore the poll is invalid.

Barq's or Sprecher root beer and a good vanilla ice cream.

The only Root Beers I ever see around my parts are A&W and Barq's; some stores will occasionally carry a different brand, but the stocking is inconsistent.

From what I recall, Barq's is a bit sweeter and smoother than A&W, which tends to be a bit heavier and has a bolder flavor.

Re: What Root Beer is best for making a float?

I don't think it is the best Root Beer (for me that's IBC) but since we would always go to the A & W restaurant for special occasions when I was a kid that's the taste I remember and love best in floats.

On a side note the restaurant had a live black bear in a cage in the parking lot. If you were actually stupid enough you could get your whole arm through the bars (there was no attendant). Funny thing is, no one was ever that stupid.

I don't even want to know what ingredients from twikoff go in twikoff cola.

That must have been in the old days when A&W restaurants had real glass mugs that were frozen to 0 degrees. Their root beer was really good. The modern canned root beer isn't nearly as good, but I don't know if that's caused by my growing up or because they cheapened the recipe.

I do know for certain that going to an A&W restaurant and being given a paper cup of root beer doesn't measure up to my childhood memories. It was 110 degrees out, and I wanted a frosty mug. I haven't been back to an A&W since.

Oh yes, huge glass mugs that seemed to weigh 20 lbs in my child hands. Covered with frost and served with the most incredible burgers and fries.

Re: What Root Beer is best for making a float?

There were never any A&W restaurants around me growing up. Only recently have I been to some in northern California. The idea of a mug of root beer there sounds awesome.

And because of this thread, I went to the cafeteria to get a root beer. They only had Mug.

At locations I've visited, you can still get a frosted mug at A&W restaurants. You just have to request one. I do so each and every time.

Shaw's Supermarkets had their own cheap root beer akin to the nectar of the Gods.

Barq's has bite!

Actually, it's a small amount of caffeine that root beer usually doesn't have.

Re: What Root Beer is best for making a float?

Just make a beer float. Also A&W Cream ale is the correct answer.

I've never been to one, but my parents would always talk about their nights spent at the A&W growing up. They used to always keep a couple of A&W mugs in the freezer. I wonder what happened to those ...

I wouldn't be surprised if A&W uses a different type of sugar now than what they did back then, much like Coke. That could be the case for A&W as well. I'm not sure. I know Cokes made in Mexico still have pure cane sugar in them.
