Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

I'm thinking of getting an SL. Gave it a whirl, liked it. Any good or bad Nissan stories or whatnot? I also tried the Hyundai Sonata and Honda Accord, but preferred the Altima.

Nissan is a good car. I owned an 89 Stanza up until 2 years ago and it still ran like a champ.

I had a 95 Pathfinder (bought it in 97) that I gave up a year ago and never had any serious problems, it is still running today. The knock against Nissan is that little things go wrong (e.g. a knob breaks, or CD player hits the fritz, etc.), but the important stuff (engine, transmission, etc.) are solid.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

Had a 2000 Altima for 12 years (175,000 miles) with no major problems. It had plenty of power for a commuter car and ran well. Not a sexy car but I got my money's worth. As mentioned, little things did go wrong, but I suspect this to be true of most cars. The motors for the power windows on each side went out within days of each other at about the 10 year mark. Also about the same time, the odometer stopped working and the check engine light went on a lot, which required some computer chip to be replaced at a nominal cost. Finally traded it in last year and it still ran well.

Nissans are very solid. I test drove a 2012 Altima when I bought my car last year and liked it a lot, I just couldn't get it down to a price I liked when I was negotiating with the salesman. A friend of mine drives a 2004 and hasn't had any major issues. If you want a reliable car to last you awhile, I'd recommend it.

I'm not sure what the trade-in value is like for them though, compared to say a Honda or Toyota.

I was just car shopping recently, and I looked at Altimas. Ultimately two things kept me away: 1) I don't like the CVT - I just don't think I'd get used to it, and 2) I think they're overpriced for what you get. By the time I got done pricing out a 3.5 coupe with the nav package it was going past mid-30's. Just didn't feel that was worth it.

Wound up going with a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited Turbo. Kept it under $30K - tons of bang for the buck.

That's been about my experience with Toyota Camry. Just little PITA electrical problems. Never even had to replace the engine belts and I average 175K per car. American made cars are just not as reliable. Ford and Chevy are the ones you always see in the repair shops.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

I had a 2002 Maxima. It was a good car. I got the standard package (not the sport or luxury package) because it came standard with everything I wanted, including a 3.5L V6. Not a race car, but good power when you need it. If you're buying new, be sure and research what you get. The sport package had slightly larger wheels, (which means more expensive tire replacement) and a plastic spoiler on the back. Not really worth the additional $2500 cost.
The only problem I ever had was after 6 years, I had to replace the oxygen sensors which cost $700 to replace all 6. They didn't affect driving at all, it was just a dashboard light that came on. I could have just replaced one at a time, but it seemed like they would need replacement soon anyway and the labor was cheaper to do them all at once. Naturally, about 2 months later, a lady turned right in front of me and I totaled the car. The airbags worked great though.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

I recently bought an 07 3.5SL Altima. Great car so far. It gets about the same mileage per gallon as my Impreza but with almost double the HP. Super comfortable ride. I haven't owned it long enough to comment on its reliability. No issues yet...

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

I've had two Nissan Altimas in a row (2001, 2009) and had ZERO problems with either, thanks to proper care and maintenance. The first ran to nearly 200K miles and I loved it. I also have a really strong Nissan connection that gets me amazing deals, so that helps too, but if you're looking for a reliable, smart looking 4-cylinder riceburner, this is your automobile.

I drove a '94 Nissan Sentra from 1998-2003. Very good car, only had to trade because it was totaled in an accident.

My grandfather had a '96 Nissan Pickup (which he purchased new) that I inherited in 2003. I drove that bitch right into the ground and ended up trading it in in 2007 when the AC went out and a replacement unit would've cost me $1200.

Honda gave me $2000 for the truck.

You can already get an app for that for your iPhone.

Some of the Altima models had a chain driving the engine vs. a serpentine belt. Too bad they don't this anymore.

Nothing bad to say about Nissan. I have a '12 Juke, '07 X-Terra, and '03 Frontier. Never any problems with any of them.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

Thanks for the comments. I tried checking some Nissan forums and they're pretty ugly. One thing they kept mentioning was to absolutely not get a 2.5. Are they all just speed demons or is there some other reason to go for a 3.5?

I was seriously considering a Sonata, but after driving one, it felt a little "cheap" for lack of another word. I did like the moonroof, though.

I wonder which Sonata you drove. I've got the high-end one and there's nothing cheap about it. It hauls ass - for a 22/34 MPG 4 cylinder. Much better performance than my previous V6.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

The difference between the 2.5 and 3.5 is just power. But the 3.5 will also have better resale value since it has a higher demand. I believe there's about a 100hp difference between the two. My 07 3.5 has 270hp, which is more than enough for this car.

My first car was a 1986 King Cab truck. Il loved that truck, drove it until about 2002 until it crapped out and couldnt be fixed. They make great trucks.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

We just bought the 2013 2.5 SL last week and love it so far. Did a lot of homework before buying(BIL has a 2011, no probs so far) and the decision was made once I checked my employers discounts to see that Nissan is one of them. Dealer invoice and an additional $250 off. Didn't get the $1100 nav system since our iPhones do the job just fine (especially with full turn by turn in the upcoming iOS 6), although that means we also don't have the lane departure/blind spot/moving object warning, but felt those weren't justified in the price.

How does the 2.5 Altima achieve 27/38 MPG? That's really high MPG for a mid/full size non-hybrid sedan.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

We've had a 2003 2.5 SL since new and have not had many problems with it. The 2.5 motors used to have a fairly common problem with the crankshaft sensor failing, but I believe that was addressed. Actually, the part I used to replace it was a new revision, so I would hope they use that in the current models. It was a PITA to replace, but I saved quite a bit doing it myself.

I also had a coil pack go, but that was a simple replacement if you're at all handy.

Overall, I'd have to say I've been happy with it. Around 170 000 kms (just over 100 000 miles) on it.

Re: Opinions on the 2013 Nissan Altima (or Nissan in general)?

Wow. Love to see that there are so many positive personal experiences with Nissan vehicles.

My first vehicles was a 2-door Pathfinder...loved that beast. Drove that fucker right into the ground short of 300,000 miles...it had 250K when I inherited though. The timing belt is what finally got it, wasn't worth it to replace it.

Then I had a 1996 Pathfinder, bought it at 113K miles, got over 80K miles out of it before the transmission finally went shot. Decided to park it and get to the transmission later.

I bought a 2009 2.5 Altima Coupe almost two years ago. Runs like a champ. I'm in love with it. Really wish I would have gotten a 3.5 instead...but I was impatient.

No complaints about Nissan here. Maybe a few small things here and there, but relatively minor repairs overall with the right maintenance. Might be important to note that all of my Nissan vehicles have been manual.
