Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

These are just for general interest to see how long you've been using forums. Seems like a good site to ask since it's one of the older ones still around:

1.) What was your first forum and when did you first start posting there

2.) What's the forum you've been an active member of the longest, and when did you join it?

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

For me,

1.) I don't remember, but it was sometime in the mid to late 90's.

2.) IGN boards I've been a member at since 2000 and still post on

1) This one, and was a lurker for about 6 months looking at DVD deals.

2) Again; this one.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

1. AnandTech forums, probably about 2001 or 2, posted there for a couple of years before the kiddies started taking over and it wasn't fun anymore.

2. Was a member of the PC Pitstop forums for probably 7 years starting about 2003, became a moderator there, but the place started getting too "family friendly" for me, started banning people for becoming too controversial until there was barely anyone there anymore. -kd5-™

1. I think my first forum was either Kopy Katz or The Fal Files, that was in '99. Both still exist, amazingly.

2. Here.

I've dabbled on a few other forums since the mid '90s and spend more time lately on "a gaming forum that shall not be named" but here is where my heart is.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

1) The first place I joined was GameFAQs way back in 1997. I was looking for stuff on Final Fantasy VII and stumbled upon GameFAQs. I stopped posting there several years ago as that place has become a haven for teenage trolls, and I have outgrown that nonsense.

2) I have probably been active slightly longer on DVDTalk since my stat sheet here says I joined in June 2002, so I have been more a little more than a decade. I don't remember how or why I found this site though.

The first forum I joined and contributed to was a Criterion Collection Fan Forum (a site independant from Criterion). This was 1999.

DVDTalk I've been on the longest, posted more on. Joined 2003, but had been a daily reader for a couple years before that.

1. Customerssuck.com. I'd say I started posting there in 2001 or 2002. Not sure if it's still around or not.

2. This one. I joined up in November of 2005.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

Definitely the now defunct greenspun.com. Old message boards, I mainly posted on the Monster Rancher 2 subforum. Pretty sure it was single-handedly destroyed by a hacker.

This forum actually. Don't think I've ever cared to stick around any.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

This was my first and only major forum; I started in '99 under my real name, switched to a fake handle in 2001. I've dropped out several times, for several years at a time, but tend to lurk and drift back. I lasted less than a year on facebook before getting sick of myself; this is all the social media I need.

The only two forums that I have ever signed up for was this one and Home Theater Forum. I registered at the same time and have about 200 total posts at htf. Enough said.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

1. cityonfire.com, a site devoted to Asian cinema. Guessing that I started posting and reviewing movies there around '99-'00.

2. Most active here (joined in '04), but occasionally stop by COF.

Usenet in the early 90s, if you want to count that as a forum. I've actually been on DVDtalk as a regular lurker since the site first went public, but only bothered registering when it looked like the Blu-ray format needed support here.

First started posting on either a local board or the IMDB. Still check out both but rarely post.

This is the forum where I'm most active for the longest time.

2) Was on SSH for about 10-12 years.. Or I guess as long as I've been here now.

I did actually join a music BBS now that I think about it, this was probably near the tail-end of BBS and around the time where forums as we know them got big.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

Usenet in the 90s. When the Usenet netizens migrated to password-protected Yahoo groups, I didn't follow.

I've been here the longest. I get bored with most forums.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

1.) VGF Forums, i started posting there March 2001 as Toadyking, followed soon by the now defunct WizardWorld (and one of its many spinoffs Issue9mm), and then this one came around later on. Joined GameFaqs a tad later as numerous aliases but deleted acct there a year or 2 ago, just grew out of the teen-population, i do miss >_> and all of those smilies and they have a crazy board-tribe culture there.

Also obviously IMDB extensively.

2.) I guess IMDB, with this coming in second, since the forum is pretty well-knit but a tad too adult for my liking (really Otterville is sorta boring and i absolutely dont give a crap about tech-specs which is the foundation of this community, heck i'll watch a betamax tape and wont care), but i really like the giant zanyness of the IMDB boards.

Also i regular the Bond community CommanderBond and the MST3K Proboard, and joined but only a handful of posts on FistfulOfLeone and Conan.com. There have been a handful of other board communities i have just forgotten strewn throughout the years, Zelda boards, MetroidDatabase, Godfather.net, Feldgrau, Axis History, The History Channel (when it was around), Unexplained Mysteries, Hyrulianwar.com. AintItCool is like crack though, more zany than imdb but i cannot post there anymore lest i be consumed by it.

What was your handle? I joined somewhere 03/04. Was Thundercadius and Snikerdoodel.

Re: Couple of general questions for you forum goers:

1. Do the message boards on AOL 3.0 count? No? In all honesty, the major message board I remember joining first was Home Theater Forum in April 2000. One month before I joined DVD Talk.

2. DVD Talk. HTF went to hell as their moderators and new users were pretentious douchebags. Hell, the moderators and users here are pretentious douchebags (myself included), but at least we're fun. In all honesty, a lot of the friends I made on HTF all jumped ship around the same time frame that I migrated full time over here. To be honest, even with a dwindling active user base, this place still rocks. Even when debates get heated over in Movie Talk, it's nowhere near as bad as say the jerkoffs in r/movies/ who believe they all have a master's degree in film.

No idea on the first question. Would've been sometime in 1996 or 1997.

This one, on the second... maybe.
