Rate Your Vacations (2012) / Suggestions

I have been burning through excess vacation days (that can't be cashed out, we had PTO once upon a time.) lately, I've taken maybe 5 this year (from 4 to 9 days a piece) and plan on wedging a lot more in. Any suggestions? Basically looking to do anything that stretches beyond shopping (which I can do fine from the comfort of my chair in the warm glow of this computer monitor.)

Wow, lame. I had thought that was something employers had to do but it looks like only about half of states legally require it. Even so, I strongly suspect a lot of good employers even in states that do not require it still pay out.

Go see Glacier National Park. It is amazing.

Yeah take a cruise to Alaska. Cruises are cheap right now and you have a somewhat good chance of the boat not tipping over!

Glacier National Park sounds like a good one, may have to do that. Hawaii I don't think I can afford right now. Alaska, sans cruise, seems like a great one too if I can keep costs reasonable.

I did Cali last year, and while I had a blast, am probably alright on that unless I get a job out there. Been to Cali, Seattle/Vancouver/Whistler BC (snowboarding), Bethel Maine (snowboarding), NYC, Atlanta (Skydiving, Scuba @ Aquarium), and Key Largo (scuba) in the last year, getting my "single still" bucket list taken care of before I hit 30

Going to Wyoming next year.

I can't imagine wanting to be anywhere but Alaska in the summer. I'd take a one way cruise up, then go fishing on the Kenai Peninsula, then visit Denali. You can't go wrong with southeast, kenai, south central, or denali.

If you have the money, go to New Zealand. Absolutely beautiful country. Once you get there, gas aside, it's not very expensive.

Saw some nature show and they were talking about how Glacier National Park doesn't much glaciers anymore. I've never been there but I'm sure it's still beautiful even without the glaciers.

How about doing a bbq trip? Hit Memphis, Kansas City (Otter Meat!) and Texas. They're all in the same region of the US so you could do a long roadtrip or short flights. Not sure where you live, though.

My wife and I went to Antarctica last year, it was awesome. Pricey, but incredible.

And if you do, go to Queenstown. One of my favorite places I've ever visited.

this year, not really going anywhere because of the newborn. i am taking vacation time in october and over christmas. i will also be doing my regular vegas trip in november. outside of that, nothing.

next year should be fun, though. hawaii, san diego, maybe disneyland and a few other things.

With our budget deficit we can use any tourist dollars we can get.

Cruising may actually be cheaper than you think. These days the cost of the cruise/food just about matches what you'd pay for a hotel/food. Plus the ship will get you right up close to the glaciers in Glacier National Park - you really don't want to miss that.

For example princess has a tour right now for $799pp on a 7 day cruise and then a couple of days in Denali and a couple in Fairbanks. Not bad at all.

Oh yeah, cruises are some of the cheapest vacations you can have if you keep your drinking and gambling under control (to that effect, Vegas would also be a reasonable vacation). I've just been on so many in that last few years that I find them tremendously boring now.

Save your vacation money and buy a new PS3 instead - one with a bigger hard drive.

I wasn't all that impressed with Christchurch, but to be fair, we didn't spend much time there.

I am guessing that you have your parks mixed up Glacier National Park is in Montana. I dont' recall seeing cruise ships last time I was there. Glacier Bay is in Alaska

Also a great little place to visit in NZ is Wanaka. A nice little town, on a huge lake. Spent a few days there in a hostel. Good times. Also enjoyed visiting Oamaru. My favourite cheese in the world is made there at the Whitestone cheese factory. Also, the town gets raided by penguins every evening. THey have a "viewing area" but we noticed that they were still all around town.
