2011 Taxes - how are you doing it, and how much does it cost?

Just wondering if you are using software or a tax preparer, and how much the preparation costs.

I am using Turbotax's Premier Edition since I have a rental house. Cost is $56 (through a State Farm discount link). I will do the state taxes on my own to save the $30 Turbotax wants for that. Illinois taxes are really easy.

Minus the fact they are taking another 2% this year

I'm an accountant

I pay zero taxes.

Barring a retraction of all the additional tax cuts enacted by Obama, I won't pay for another 10 years.

I used TurboTax Deluxe, Costco coupon, $39.99. It allows a free State download. The Federal e-file is free although I prefer to mail it in with my check. The State tax form is free but they charge for e-filing it. I print and mail with my check.

I usually do my own taxes. I have a brother who is a CPA and if they're too complicated, I send them to him, but this year I did my own. Sgt Honeylamb's went to him, though--because of the deployment, her taxes were more complicated.

Accountant paid for by employer.

Accountant specifically asked to report any online purchases made that we didn't pay sales tax on. She seemed pretty serious about it too like PA is going to be cracking down. We gave her our total Amazon purchases but I honestly don't know of ALL the places online I've ordered from off the top of my head.

Your income? You realize when you get a refund it's just taxes you overpaid right?

Re: 2011 Taxes - how are you doing it, and how much does it cost?

Switched from Turbo Tax to TaxAct this year. Got tired of feeling ripped off paying $40 bucks to state efile when my refund is typical around $200 bucks. Only 17 bucks with TaxAct.

Which state, and how complicated are your state taxes? That is, can you just do them on paper?

Spent about $40 on HR Tax at Home. Left a bunch of deductions on the table so I can get on one of those commercials next year and tell everyone how H&R Block found me thousands of dollars redoing my return.

Re: 2011 Taxes - how are you doing it, and how much does it cost?

I spent $17 for a digital download from Amazon of "H&R Block At Home Deluxe". I used that to file my federal taxes, and then just filed for free at the Illinois Dept of Revenue website using info from my federal forms. So, it didn't cost much at all to file. But I had to pay about $900 in additional fed & state taxes since I didn't prepay much in taxes for profits I made last year from selling some stocks.

Re: 2011 Taxes - how are you doing it, and how much does it cost?

TaxAct for free for my fed (I ended up owing $141 for a few reasons - lost a child tax credit and received a promotion that bumped me up) ... was not impressed with it this year (have used it in the past).

State was free on the Illinois Department of Revenue website ... it amazes me how many people still do not know about this and continue to buy software. Despite the state's tax increase, I am getting back $183. (FYI, TaxAct was only projecting me to get $53 back from the state ... glad I didn't use theirs!)

Re: 2011 Taxes - how are you doing it, and how much does it cost?

My CPA does it. Costs around $400. That seems on the top end of fair, but I've been doing some pretty simple revisions of past taxes and he's charging about $250 for those. I'm going to be moving to a more creative CPA soon.

They probably had not yet applied your property tax credit.

Same thing happened to me with Turbotax, they showed me as owing $200 or so, but when I started the state taxes they applied the credit and it looks like I'll get a $10 refund.

You can do the state taxes for free with Turbotax and I assume TaxAct, you just pay if you e-file, or print them off.
