YACT: Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang

I can't make up my mind!!! My 12 y/o wants me to get a Mustang because he expects me to pass on down to him by the time he reaches driving age. But I had my eye on a Challenger for a while now. I originally wanted but eliminated the Camaro because I didn't fit well in it and found the driver visibility to be piss poor. Any thoughts?

Re: YACT: Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang

From the outside I like the Challeger much better, I hate Dodge interiors though, they're so plain.

Are you really going to go for it and get an SRT Challenger or whatever the Mustang equivilent is or are you looking at the lower trim packages?

If you want something fun and maybe a little too retro then get the Challenger. If you want a modern sporty car with retro styling, get the Mustang.

Get what YOU want. You'll be the driver for some time to come.

If your 12 y/o wants a Mustang bad enough, tell him to start saving up now. Once he's old enough for a job then he can start seriously looking at a Mustang.

I tend to think people drive recent Mustang's are either douches or high school girls with rich daddies. I'd drive a Challenger in a heartbeat though.

Get whatever car you want. You are paying for it.

Don't give a teen a mustang. That is a bad combination. A srt challenger isn't a good idea either.

Mustang, Challenger is way to heavy, and the interior is absolute crap.

Re: YACT: Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang

For performance: The Mustang, the GT otherwise what's the point.
For looks: The Challenger

But I'd rather have one like this:

My girlfriend has a Mustang, and it's really pretty awesome.

She bought it herself, not her rich daddy. And it's been a while since she's been in high school.

I'll echo the thoughts on Dodge's having shitty interiors. I've never been in one that I liked. Yeah, they can look nice on the outside, but just always seem uncomfortable and annoying from the inside.

Re: YACT: Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang

You are having a hard time because of what your 12 year old wants?

My 12 year old constantly is talking about getting a car, or getting mine when he is 16, etc. I have repeatedly told him, "I will get you a car, and it will suck. It may even be new, but it will not have A/C, it may not have a radio. It will have nothing. It will get you through college and provide transportation that is safe and reliable....and your friends will make fun of it. You will hate it. But hopefully, you will decide that you should get a decent education and get a job so that you can buy your own car that doesn't suck. But if you are depending on my for your car, I will choose it, and it will suck."

Try that.

My dad would have bought the Challenger and laughed if I even suggested I'd get any car, much less HIS car.

Re: YACT: Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang

Your kids have you whipped, I'm guessing. But looks wise I prefer the Challenger. The interior I'm not too hot one. As an overall package I'd go with the Mustang.

Why aren't you considering the new Camaro since you're in to the retro sports car?

To everyone that's talking about the shitty interiors of a Dodge, have any of you been inside of a new one? I know that's been a problem with Dodge (and Chrysler in general) in years past, but I've heard they've really been upgraded in the last year or two.

Have you?

I test drove a 2012 and it was lacking in compared to the Mustang at a comparable price. I didn't care for the interior.

No, I haven't, I was truly asking, because that's what I heard, and I wanted to know if there were any informed opinions on whether that was true or not.

I was in a couple of top of the line SRT's as the car show in January and the interior was almost identical to the 2006 Dodge Magnum I had a few years back. Plain, boring, and cheap.

Re: YACT: Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang

I agree the interiors aren't much to look at but everything is intelligently placed. The SRT seats provide good grip when taking corners and are great for long distances. SRTs have a good balance when it comes to spirited driving and are very docile when just cruising around. Their obviously not daily drivers, though. I only get 13mpg in mine. I would like to get my hands on a new Mustang 5.0, though. I had two 5.0's in the 80's and they were a blast to drive.

Re: YACT: Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang

THE CHALLENGER in B5 BLUE! Back in '08 I bought the '08 Charger Daytona Edition but my first choice was the Challenger. This was right before they came out and were only giving each of the 5 or 6 dealers I visited 5 Challengers. I was ready to buy the car on the spot, but when I asked the price the salesguy gave me a figure of 95k. I thought it was a joke. He told me that buyers were bidding on them. If I could do it over, I wouldve waited another year and got that B5 Blue Challenger...
Whoever posted the Mustang for performance and Challenger for looks is way off. An SRT (or even R/T) will outperform a Stang any day.
Also, whoever said the Challenger's interior is plain looking I'd agree with. The Charger's interior is very similar to the Challenger and not only is it plain, but kind of cheaply made.

Horsepower
Challenger R/T 376
Mustang GT 412

Zero to 60
Challenger R/T 5.0
Mustang GT 4.4

Quarter mile
Challenger R/T 13.5 @ 105mph
Mustang GT 12.7 @ 111mph

Braking 60 to zero
Challenger R/T 112ft
Mustang GT 104ft

Top Speed
Challenger R/T 170mph
Mustang GT 155mph

The SRT8 and the GT500 are really close performance wise. The SRT8 is a second faster 0-60. And the GT500 is a mph faster in the quarter mile. Top speeds are the same as above. Braking for the GT500 is the same as above while the SRT8 takes 117 feet to stop.

2012 Mustang Boss 302. No question. At $36K base, it's one of the best deals in the car world.

For 2013, this will no longer be the case. Not even close.
