For far too many years my life alternated between alcohol and drugs, spent 3 stays in the hospital as a result, came so close to dying in 1992 people at the rehab weren't expecting me to survive. But I did, I've been drug & alcohol free since then, married, I have incentives to live! It's always sad to hear about someone who has troubles with drugs and/or alcohol, I can only ever hope they'll get the help they need to get away from that shit. The ones who don't will inevitably waste away and die.
As a few have already said, it's sad to hear about Whitney's death, but not totally unexpected. -kd5-

You know..... I was with some friends and we had the tv playing in the background on ABC and it was some Charlie Brown special.
A special news report interupts the broadcast, and the news anchor starts off by saying something along the lines of "We understand that we are interrupting a children program, and this may be unsuitable for them".
At this point I am thinking about ALL of the bad, fucked up shit that some fellow humans have done somewhere on this planet. Or some type of disaster......
But it's just Whitney........
I have to say that I sighed with relief, but was quite angry with ABC for going that route to inform us of her passing.
This is 2012 after all......

TMZ is reporting she was found underwater in her bathtub.
It's sounding like she possibly OD'd on something and then drowned.
Edit: There is another story on the site that says she was taking Xanex and may have taken too much then drowned after falling asleep.
Noone is going to know for sure until the autopsy.

I don't think that excessive partying is an automatic death sentence. I think that most rock stars try the rock-star lifestyle. Most of them come out of it again, and only a few of them die of it. But the survivors don't make much of an impression on us. People remember John Coltrane and Amy Winehouse. People forget the guys like Eric Clapton who stopped recording songs about cocaine and moved on.

Here's my thing. I often get a vibe the many Stars would LOVE to get off drugs but because the "Ego/Image" issues many stars have...and most certainly the "Posse/Parasite" nature of the biz where these shitbags hang out and cause nothing but trouble by handing them drugs and booze, NOT looking after their best interests, and doing nothing but lying to them and stroking the Star's Egos when they should be telling them to straighten the fuck up... it's *almost* impossible to do so. I mean shit, they have to take responsibility for themselves, but they're only human and having Negative people around them like that can only add to the damage.
There are stories that Whitney was fucked up on drugs -BEFORE- she even got big in Show Biz and -BEFORE- Bobby Brown. Show biz and BB just made it easier to do it.
And don't get me started on these Celeb Rehab places. I mean with the possible exception of the one Dr Drew runs, I'm not sure any of them are any good. 1 trip to rehab for a couple days isn't enough for most folks. I could be wrong, but I'm betting I'm not. The girl who called to tell me WH had died is currently in Rehab. She was all freaked out because she saw what happened to WH and saw the same thing happening to her. She also mentioned how many repeating patients were in her Rehab unit. Sadly for most folks rehab is not a One and Done thing....

Anyone who'd followed reports of Whitney Houston's bizarre behavior in the days leading up to the Grammys had to have been "shocked, but not surprised" at reports of her demise, as the saying goes. Thursday in particular had been an obviously rough day in public for the troubled singer, whose appearance and behavior raised eyebrows among reporters, photographers, and regular folks who witnessed her erratic rounds.
First she first visited Brandy, Monica, and Clive Davis at rehearsals for the mogul's pre-Grammys party, where a Los Angeles Times reporter described her as reeking of alcohol, "visibly bloated," and "disheveled in mismatched clothes and hair that was dripping wet with either sweat or water." According to the Times, when Houston wasn't mugging and gesticulating wildly for Brandy and Monica — who were doing a media junket, as well as preparing a duet — she was alternately skipping around the lobby or "wandering aimlessly" around the Beverly Hills Hotel grounds. Reportedly, guests had even called security to report the singer doing handstands by the hotel pool.
Houston's Thursday was about to get worse… way worse. That evening, she attended a party headlined by Kelly Price at the Tru nightclub in Hollywood. As she exited, seeming intoxicated, photographers took close-ups of her legs, which appeared to be spotted with blood streaks, along with scratches on her wrists.
Wherever the blood and scratches came from, it wasn't from any publicly visible scuffle — although that had reportedly narrowly been avoided.
