Why no anchovies?

Why do movie and TV characters request no anchovies when ordering pizza? I don't see it much in newer stuff, but it was very common in 80s movies and TV shows. I've never had to specify no anchovies when placing an order, and I'm not even sure that most pizza shops even carry them because I rarely see them on the list of toppings. Was there a time when pizzerias threw anchovies on every pizza unless told otherwise?

You have to specify no anchovies or else you risk a male prostitute showing up to deliver your pizza.

Re: Why no anchovies?

Because they're gross?

I have never seen anyone order anchovies on a pizza. If anything, they say NO anchovies, which leads me to believe that anchovies must have once been a pretty common offering on pizza.

However, my favorite salad dressing, Green Goddess, is traditionally made with anchovies, so my not liking them on pizza is inconsistent. Nonethless, there you are.

I love 'chovies on my 'za! Sometimes even extra 'chovies.

I've also been known to eat them right out of the tin with a salad.

That almost sounds like the revenge pizza from an episode of Friends.

Ross: No anchovies
Rachel: And can you put a whole can of anchovies on top of the pizza?
Ross: Oh. ok. I can just pick them off.
Rachel: And can you pour the juice from the can all over the pizza too?

Or something like that. I was going from memory.

Re: Why no anchovies?

If you order pizza with the works, it may include anchovies in some restaurants. So someone ordering this that is allergic to anchovies or just doesn't like them would ask for those to be excluded.

I was going to do the same thing! That album got a lot of needle-time back in the day

While I normally don't order anchovies on pizza, I have had it that way and it's not too bad. But then I've eaten dried anchovies out of the bag.

My buddy ordered a couple slices with them on it on the way home from a vacation a couple years back... stunk up the whole restaurant. When he was done (didn't finish one piece) the waiter came back and asked if he could clear any dishes away and in unison about 15 people (including others not with our party) just pointed at his plate and yelled "THAT!"

Anchovies are awful but sometimes as an ingredient they're crucial.

There's a great pizza place by the University of Arizona campus named No Anchovies.

Used to work in a pizza place, sadly anchovies were enjoyed by many.

For the Goose, I will do research.

I learned that anchovies were originally part of pizza because they were plentiful in the Mediterranean, and pizza was originally a common fisherman's lunch (akin to the ploughman's lunch in England, perhaps?)

Otter has broadened my knowledge once again. I thank you. *curtsy*

Re: Why no anchovies?

Use anchovies for this. Spread on a good bread, this is unbelievably awesome:

Tapenade

1/4 pound imported black olives, pitted

2 garlic cloves, halved, green shoots removed

1 1/2 tablespoons capers, drained and rinsed thoroughly with cold water

2 anchovy fillets (optional)

1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves

1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 can olive-oil packed light (not albacore) tuna

Freshly ground pepper

1. Make sure that there are no pits mixed in with your olives.

2. Turn on a food processor fitted with a steel blade, and drop in the garlic. When finely chopped and adhering to the sides of the machine, stop the machine and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the remaining ingredients, except the tuna, and puree to a smooth paste. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, and add the tuna and optional anchovies. Process until you have a smooth paste. Add freshly ground pepper to taste. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate, covered, until ready to use.

Yield: Makes about 1 1/4 cups

Advance preparation: This will keep for three or four days in the refrigerator. Place it in a bowl and cover with a film of olive oil and plastic wrap.

Re: Why no anchovies?

I love anchovies, I eat them right out of the jar. I only occasionally put them on pizza though, they seem to overpower everything else.

One thing that's really good is hot banana peppers stuffed with anchovies and mozzarella cheeze, brushed with olive oil and broiled.

It's rare, but I've had them. I don't think mainstream places offer them too much these days, but who on DVDTalk eats at a mainstream pizza place?

Re: Why no anchovies?

Found the Friends quote:

Rachel: (Ordering a pizza) We'd like to order a large pizza.
Ross: (To Rachel) No anchovies.
Rachel: With extra anchovies.
Ross: That's all right; I'll just pick 'em off.
Rachel: And could you please chop some up and put them right there in the sauce?

This does not appeal to me:

Exactly. If your pizza place doesn't offer anchovies by default, you are using a shitty pizza place.
