YACT - Can a cat just go insane?

We have a Calico tricolor (not a purebreed), who just turned nine and we've had her since she was a kitten.
Lulu has never been a friendly cat, although she likes my wife more than she likes me. No one else has even seen her, she hides from everyone. She might allow us to pet her for a few moments, then she'll hiss and leave. Curling up in a lap is out of the question. Picking her up is something I haven't done in probably more than two years. She always did like our other cat though.
She spends most of her time in the master bedroom, on the bed when alone or under it when not. At night she will stay in the living room. She doesn't care for human company.

Anyway the last 6-8 weeks, she has gotten worse. She won't even go near my wife or my other cat anymore. She spend her days in one of the spare bedrooms, and will HOWL if someone comes in the room and stands between her and the door.
She will hiss if you approach her, and arch her back, something she has never done. It's like she's terrified of something. She even pooped there yesterday. There have been no changes to the house, and she hasn't suffered any trauma.

Why would a cat just flip out like that? It's getting to the point that we're discussing gettting rid of her, but that would be a death sentence.

Sounds like she might have an illness. She's trying to get both you and your wife's attention. When is the last time she visited the vet? I'd recommend a simply checkup, which would indicate a possible urinary infection.

I agree it sounds like she has a medical issue and should be checked out.

If you do decide to get rid of her, just make sure you don't tweet about.

She may have a sinus infection. Cats "see" the world through scent, and if they can't smell, they aren't sure you are YOU. Sinus infections can distort smell, not just block it, as many humans know from their own experience.

Get her to the vet.

Re: YACT - Can a cat just go insane?

I agree that a vet visit is in order. Cats are prey animals, so they aren't going to act sick when they're sick--they're going to try to cover it up, for fear they'll end up lunch for some other animal if they show any weakness.

If she's crying in her litterbox, it could be that she hurts from a urinary infection.

My oldest kitty, Thisbe, who I had to put to sleep last year, was kind of like that--very unfriendly toward anybody but me (the Bringer of Kibble, lol) and even me she only tolerated. This cat may have been insufficiently socialized as a kitten (I mean before you got her) or she may just be a cat that likes to be admired from a distance. One of my black ones, Cushie, is like that. If she comes to me for pets, fine. But she does not like being picked up, held, or carried around, and sitting against my leg on the sofa is the closest she'll get to being a lap cat.

Please get this kitty to the vet ASAP. It might be something very simple, but she's obviously in distress.

Thanks for the responses.

NOW, any idea how to muscle an angry, freakishly strong, 15 pound cat into a cat carrier?

put the carrier in the bathroom, and chase the cat in there. Close the door behind you. For my cat at least, once he realizes he isn't getting out of the bathroom until he gets into the carrier, he puts up less of a fight.

Angry, freakishly strong, 15 pound, and insane cat. Do you have access to a dart gun?

Cats don't just go insane. They start that way. Any behavior from a cat that is not insane is learned.

Keep in mind that I LOVE cats, but if this were my cat, it would become an outdoor cat. Good luck to you.

If the catnip or food don't work, throw a large thick towel over her.

Hope it's a simple easy fix and good luck.

Re: YACT - Can a cat just go insane?

I have two cats. The older one doesnt put up much of a fight getting into the carrier anymore but the younger one is a pain in the ass. You can grab her to put her in but I have to do it fast because she is so small and wiry. She will slip out of the cage before I can shut the door and then its chasing her all over the place trying to catch her.

Corner her, toss a heavy blanket over her, scoop up and stuff into carrier, then remove blanket. Chasing her into the bathroom is good too, you can also just man up and scruff her neck, just point the sharp ends away from you. Best of luck.

Wily. Unless she's actually quite thin and metallic. Or Asian.

Re: YACT - Can a cat just go insane?

Update:

We took her to the vet today. Not too hard getting her in the box. She didn't like it and squawked a lot, but finally settled down. She fought during the exam, but once she realized there was no place to go, she gave up.

She's actually 19.9 pounds, so both cats are going on weight control IAMS. Odd since she only eats the dry food, it's the other cat that will beg at the table and eat canned cat food and Zuzu is smaller.

So she has an infection on her abdomen. She's always been hairless on her belly for whatever reason, I guess she chews on it. When she was a kitten and had her operation, she took out her own stitches.
The doc gave her a shot of antibiotics and gave us a six month supply of some oil to be applied between her shoulder blades, I assume that's so she can't lick it off.

Cost: $450

Poor little snookie. Too bad she wasn't provided with a Cone of Shame to keep her from chewing her stitches. Wish I could give her a big hug and a cuddle.

Also ... my Cushie will only eat dry food and she's bigger than all of my cats. I think they need the higher protein content of canned food, which is why I try to give mine both kinds.

Did someone say "Cone of Shame"? Sirius almost lost his tail back in August....
