Trick-or-treat for UNICEF: Anyone heard of this?

Sorry this is a little late for Halloween, but I'm still baffled by this.

Apparently it's a long-standing thing...we sure didn't do it when I was growing up (I'm 33).

My daughters pre-school sent these boxes home and the kids are supposed to take it with them when they trick or treat and collect money for UNICEF. I blew it off because there's no way my 3 year old could hold this thing up and explain that she was collecting money for charity.

But the more I thought about it the whole thing baffled me. How can this possibly work? So the kid goes to the door and the home-owners got a bucket of candy and the kid says, "can I have some money for charity?" and then the home-owner is supposed to run around his house looking for loose change, meanwhile there's 5 other kids ringing his doorbell yelling "trick or treat". How can this possibly work? It's just not a moment conducive to soliciting for money. Then today I learned it's been around for years and I'm blown away. How can this have gone on for 70 years?

I'm 29, and I remember carrying around the UNICEF box when I was 5.

Re: Trick-or-treat for UNICEF: Anyone heard of this?

I did it in the late 60s, early 70s. I remember my friends and I didn't want to waste any time on Halloween night, so we would go around after school as soon as we got the boxes. You are correct, terrible idea for a supplemental Trick or Treat activity.

Now that I think more about it, it may have been an actual suggestion from our teachers that we make the rounds pre-Halloween.

I remember doing this when I was a wee one...early 80's I guess. I haven't seen it since!

I've been aware of it since I was a kid, but never remember doing it or being asked to do it.

Born in 74 and this is the first I hear of this but fuck that. Trick or Treat is for running around and collecting candies and getting into mischief save that shit for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Give them a copy of None Dare Call it Conspiracy and have them hand it to their teacher.

Re: Trick-or-treat for UNICEF: Anyone heard of this?

I was born in 1960, and I was coerced to do the UNICEF-at-Halloween once as a kid. Didn't pan out well, as I recall. But then I did give it a pretty half-assed try because I didn't want it to cut into MY trick-or-treating.

Re: Trick-or-treat for UNICEF: Anyone heard of this?

I used to do it every year growing up... 70's and 80's. But we never did it on Halloween. Usually the Sunday (or maybe Saturday) before. And always during the day.

Same here in the early 70's. We'd go around before dark on Halloween begging.

Born in the late 60's and never did this but I heard about it on TV. I believe Unicef also has Christmas greeting cards for kids to sell door-to-door during the holiday season.

Only thing I solicited were those large chunky chocolate bars. The kid with the most sold won a prize and the money would go to the school.

Re: Trick-or-treat for UNICEF: Anyone heard of this?

I remember kids doing this in the 70's-80's. We always felt sorry for them, but not sorry enough to share our candy.

One year in particular, a lot of my friends were forced to do UNICEF because parents were freaking out about razorblades and needles in candy. It was probably 1982 when people were going nuts over the Tylenol poisoning.

My parents had a little pile of quarters next to the candy bowl for any UNICEF kids. So I've always kept a couple quarters handy on Halloween. But I haven't seen anyone with those boxes in years.

40, did it several times in the 70s while living in New England. In 4th grade, moved to the deep South and don't think I ever saw anyone doing it again.

Never heard of it either, but my son's preschool had them. I had to read the thing to understand it, too.

Never heard of it. Sounds like it'd be a logistical nightmare.

Nah, it was just this little foldout cardboard box that you carried along with your candy sack. All the parents would have bowls of change next to their bowls of candy and would give you a piece of candy and then drop a coin or two into your box. You took the box with the coins in it to school the next day.

That's just it. I think if I sent my kid out with this thing she would be met with blank faces by people who are passing out candy and don't have any money on them.

I never heard of kids doing both candy and UNICEF. In my neighborhood, kids either did one or the other. The UNICEF kids usually got candy or a present from their parents.

Re: Trick-or-treat for UNICEF: Anyone heard of this?

We all did it as children in the '80s. We'd fold the little orange boxes in class at school and then bring the collected coinage in the next day.
I haven't seen kids do it in many a year, though.

I remember it back in the 70s. Don't think I ever did it.
